Thread: Bloody DoC (Maybe)

Took a couple of folks who are looking at getting into hunting out for an overnighter by inangahua, last time i was out there about three months ago there were decent numers of deer, pigs and a few mobs of about 10 goats I saw. i figured we'd have a decent chance of gettig an animal for them.

well I don't know who'd been through but over the course of about 2 hours walk in I counted 7 goats and 2 deer shot and left by the side of the track. no meat taken, nothing taken off the goats to indicate it was part of the competition thats running at the moment, just animals rotting beside the track.

all it would have taken was dragging them about 2-3m and they could have been rolled down a bank and off the track but no, literally on the side of the trail.

I assume it was DoC because I can't think who else would leave all that meat there and it really pisses me off because you know hunters are going to be blamed for leaving stinking, rotting animals lying around.

of course if it was a hunter they deserve to have their bloody firearms licence pulled, the sheer wastage just makes me furious.

I got blamed for a trip into waipakihi, when we flew in there was rotten carcass from a party prior within a couple days just tossed over the bank by the hut.. and it stunk. everything we shot was in the meat safe, then when we were leaving any carcasses were takenb about an extra 150 from the meatsafe ( about 500m from the hut ) and thrown into the dense bush/bank. about a week after coming out, I got an email from helisika saying there were complaints about animal carcass by the hut. I told them they were there when we arrived but they didnt seem to care and continued to blame it on me.

1. If it were doc/contract hunters, they wouldn’t shoot from track
2. If it were doc/contract hunters, they would move carcasses that are close to tracks
3. Due to numbers of animals these days shooting and leaving is happening, a lot. It’s the best way to lower numbers fast there’s going to be a lot more of it happening in future

Some people will do anything to paint hunters in a bad light, sometimes even warranted.

I agree that they shouldn't be left by the track, but as far as shooting animals and not taking any meat off them I really couldn't care less.

When you see the state of some of our forest parks then I would say it should happen more. I shoot hundreds of goats on public land and never take any meat off them and I still sleep well.

I certainly don't think it should be a firearms offense, the police have more important things to do.

Yeah, Maybe I didn't explain myself well.

shooting and leaving an animal, goats especially, isn't a bad thing, but the sheer laziness of where they were left is what's winding me up. if you've got the physical fitness to walk 5-6km past the end of the road you've got the fitness to clean up your own mess.
I had to make a point to the people I brought in that it wasn't an acceptable practice.

There’s a few out there that lack some basic hunter etiquette. Found this carcass in the Purakanui Falls block during the last roar allocation. Left out in the open where it was shot. The hunter before me obviously couldn’t be bothered dragging it downhill a few meters into the scrub. It was a heaving mess that I smelt thirty metres away. And don’t get me started on the a-hole that was roaring up the block the last two out of only six days allocated. Felt like I had crosshairs on my back the whole time!!! First and last time I’ll be hunting the roar around here.

I don’t care how many deer there are, if I shoot an animal there’s no way I’m not taking any meat off it. Just the way I’ve been brought up I guess. Respect the animal

roaring up the block - yup my pet hate to - idjits - mate and I did a trip into Mangatiti -a party came down main ridge opposite us about a kilometre away - roared continuosly every 10 mins middle of day - no f@%&!n idea - what the hell they thought they were doing - they would have heard us shooting animals early morning and evening so we did not run into them - they are lucky as they would have had their pedigrees recited -

If there is carcases left on or near a public walking track or hut, it only needs the next vegan fitness freak weekend warrior to tramp past and stir up a load of media about dead animals etc....

I wouldn't just assume it was DoC. Most likely a Muppet who has decided to leave them on the side of the track. As said above DoC or contract shooters will be required to remove any carcasses away from tracks. I would be proactive and report it to your local office. If it was in fact their own shooters then they will be talked to.
As to @Bush Basher people are all different. If someone doesn't take all or any meat it doesn't mean that hunter has shown less respect to that animal than someone who has taken all the meat.

roaring like an idiot will sometimes get one going when they are otherwise quiet.Ive often seen advice given in magazines etc to roar regularly if things are quiet.who cares what others techniques are-public land ya gotta take it in the chin.

JMO, As a hunting community, We should all be careful with the value we place on being able to hunt for free range venison at will, without fees. Dispite the bush needing some breathing space in certian places, not all areas are inandated with deer, alot have none. Leaving un- utilised full deer carcasses i think sends the wrong message. And as soon as the value is perseived to be gone, so will the deer, with full time cullers and 1% tax to gst to pay for their complete removal.

I've obviously got 'no f@%&!n idea' then as I roar all day long from the minute I leave the carpark or camp..

no bite I am not going to dignify that with an argument some learn hunting the hard way
