Thread: Blue Mountains Fallow Colour Morphs

Shot these two spikers in the Blueys yesterday. While I've never seen any, I've heard these ginger buggers in there. I realise that fallow have a heap of variations, but this herd is invariably black. Funny to get these two together. Anyone got other colours in the Blueys?

I shot a big bodied buck with the same colouration last year but he had far more pronounced spots. Really striking skin, I ended up tanning it. Came up mint.

@Hunty1 I just heard from a mate who reminded me his best buck (out of Whiskey Gully) was ginger and spotty too.
At first I thought I was looking at a ginger pig (which would have been welcome too), until it step out a bit more. The second one I shot through the head (covered in the photo for the sake of good taste) and carried out whole, so I might keep the skin of that.

Make the most of it because someone told me just recently that Doc are going to bomb the Blues with 1080. Don’t know how true it is

Haha have been caught out the opposite way round, seen black movement and and closer inspection has revealed black pigs! I've Always have let them walk, rather have a feed of veni!

I love wild pork and don't get it very often, always take the option if I bump into piggy.

When I first start hunting in the Blueys, I dismissed the black thing as a shadow only to have the "shadow" get up and leap away! The wee fallow can be hard little buggers to spot in the bush.

I have seen white with spots in there, but only once. The rest were all black to grey underneath.
There are reds in there again now, came across 4 red hinds right on the northern edge a couple of years ago.

Amazing what you realise you would have walked past once you start using an indicator dog down there! They are cunning wee deer alright. With the amount of pressure they get it's hardly surprising really. Love hunting down there, great challenge.

Only run into pigs in the Northern blocks so far, but seen plenty of rooting elsewhere in there too.

Sound like a good mix of species in the north blocks now then!

Yes @Carlsen Highway heard of reds in the Northern area about 10 years ago. Probably started as farm escapees, although could easily have walked in from the hill country beyond Raes Junction. Can't see them getting really established as I'd say the wee fallow would out compete them. Hopefully they don't establish as the Blueys are really a unique hunting experience. White one eh? I saw one up the Caples once.

I've only ever seen one live pig in the Blueys, a very skinny and sick ginger one I shot in Armstrongs years ago. Only animal (other than unrecoverable tahr) that I have ever left on the hill; did it favour I reckon. Seen plenty of dead ones on the back of pig hunters utes, while heading in and out of the forestry. I think the pigs prefer the exotic forest rather than the bush.

I agree @Hunty1 very cunning due to huge to constant pressure. Plenty of them through.

I've seen/ shot common, menil and obviously melanistic. Meant to be whites in there too but only seen them in the greens tone.

Good work mate , I've never seen any that color up there , I shot a pure white spiker in there last winter, apart from that I've only seen blacks .

We are on the northern end of the Blue mountains and I have seen the whole rainbow of fallow markings around here, interesting is that I have regularly seen two specific Does, both pure white, and both have a yearling the colour of the ones in first post with them. Hard case watching them from a distance, the white ones certainly seem to know that they are white and seem a lot sneakier and more nervous than the common dark coloured ones

I saw but dident take a freaking monster fallow stag above tramways in 1980 same coloration. Thing was so big it looked like a red.
