Has anyone got recent (Oct 2024) knowledge of deer population around The Boyd airstrip, please? If they're around, is there specific food that might lure them in at the moment?

are you thinking of baiting?
Marsh mallows' are very popular this time of year.
well I see a little flippancy and humour going in and thats the forum- its simply that its an unusual question- suitable food - if you mean baiting and I am sure you dont its not a technique used - the exception is Stewart Island white tail where broadleaf is cut and watched - broadleaf is like ice cream to deer - we tried salt blocks on a station I worked on to attract deer - did not work - but whats there at Boyd - well spring is nearly here although I would guess Boyd more likely mid november for grass growth - any open areas that get the sun may well produce some grass especially along the sides of streams - but glassing is your best option - use of a thermal would be good - in the beech forest they will still be wandering and feeding on any new growth and windfall - but have a look for areas of new grass growth and palatable shrubs such as the comprosmas along the streams- with deer numbers up they will keep moving looking for feed
Heaps of deer in there, always produces plenty of animals!
Flick me a phone call, 021 2540309 was in there 3 weeks ago.
Sit you arse down looking at faces on first light, and last light.
You will see them.
