Buller /Tasman biggest 1080 drop in history this spring

he largest 1080 poisoning operation in New Zealand conservation history is about to get under way in northern Buller and Tasman.
The Department of Conservation is planning to carry out aerial 1080 pest control over about 270,000ha of the Kahurangi National Park this spring as part of its Battle for Our Birds predator control programme to protect native species from a plague of rats and stoats.
It was met with protests outside DOC’s Takaka office this week.
The cost of the aerial drop was about $4.3 million, DOC spokeswoman Fiona Oliphant said.
It is the largest area in DOC’s Battle for Our Birds predator control programme, and has been broken up into six operational blocks of between about 20,000 and 60,000ha.
The Kahurangi operation is one of 25 confirmed Battle for Our Birds operations using aerially-applied 1080 poison over about 680,000ha of conservation land to knock down rising predator numbers fuelled by the unusually heavy seeding in South Island beech forests.
Six operations have been completed. The largest operational block completed to date is 30,000ha at Waitutu forest, in Southland.
DOC Motueka conservation services manager Mark Townsend said it was estimated that without pest control, rat tracking levels would reach 100% in November in parts of Kahurangi National Park.

One day they will learn that their program is crap, probably already do. But the " gravy train " is too viable so why quit.

At this rate the only way our future generations will be able to see our native birds will be to go to a museum. What a waste.

Bit of a bugger aye. While I realise it is one of the most cost effective and easier ways to do it, it's to indiscriminate. But what really grinds my gears is when they say it is a humane killer. How can it be humane when death can take up to 12 hours!

In the local ensign today I see they are planning to poison waikaia again sounds like a load of BS to me they are still wanging on how good the last drop was in 2014 why do it again only 2 years latter !!

We lost a dog to 1080, they'd dropped it way outside the area they said to be the boundary in the Tararuas, (ended up not far from the Parents farm) and that was horrible to see. Poor dog started charging around the house yelpinp and shortly after started having convulsions. He was put down to end it as soon as possible. It's horrible shit!

Yea but in the article it also said after the drop there monitors got 0 hits for rats,mice so from 0 to two years later how bad can it be !!!

How many times it can mate in 6hours is irrelevant. What matters is average litter size and gestation period.

2000 per year is a fairly good stretch of the truth. 100 with a 95% mortality rate is closer....Still, they breed very fast.
I'm pretty neutral on the whole 1080 thing. DoC spin a ton of bullshit and they do have a hard time admitting it does kill kea and rock wren etc. The hardcore antis also spin a ton of bullshit too. It's good people don't take everything the govt decide without kicking up a fuss if it's deserved.

I uplifted that from Wiki. Just like all good pro-anything zelots, I searched for numbers that suited my cause :)

But I'm a bit on the fence about 1080 too. I can see the merits though, and think that the risks and down sides are over played. In balance I think that it is a useful tool in saving species. I also think a lot of the opposition is because it kills deer, but hunters aren't prepared to admit its that that they don't like so they concoct other unfouded reasons for their opposition.

Yip. Hit it on the nose. I don't like it killing deer and the lack of value placed on our recreational hunting, there will hopefully be more constructive work in the future between DoC and hunters. Reading some of the old old books, like Charlie Douglas' reports where his dog would have a dozen kakapo dead outside the tent in the morning gives me a good idea how much we have lost to predators. It's all a balance.

Also the risks of spread of TB by possums has now come out its that low and not a major factor as reported to us in the past but stock movement from one area to another is the major factor. Its lucky:sick: for them that plagues of rats and mice have taken over the country, eating eggs and totally out of control.......so much in factor WAR has been declared, Battle of the Birds, save the birds or the rats and stoats will wipe them out!
1080 drops now in record numbers,increased untold volume to control the plagues of pests , even thou its a fact that 1080 is never ever going to control or wipe out rats or stoats. 1080 will reduce numbers after a drop, but they spike back in numbers even greater than before, causing its own little rat plague as so much feed around, ideal condations to breed sees to that.
So its a on going circle, bomb the place in huge numbers, reduce the rats and as a huge bonus kill deer and pigs as a (targeted)by kill. Then the drops produce more pest numbers themselves, spike in numbers that justify a on going bomb up for years. Yes, the 1080 industry is on a winner here, they got a feel good campaign going, save the poor little birds......justifys huge areas of 1080 drops as we can all see the plague of rats that are taking over the country cant we, and every two years the cycle repeats WINNER (plus it must be the rats as no birds in the bush. what else could it be )

It didn't look to good when they did the last drop environment southland had to advertise the fact not to eat the trout before opening weekend as fish ,eels etc had traces of 1080 in them.

Yes, its annoying it kills deer, yes its annoying it kills pigs, but theres many out there that actually think dropping a toxic poison in tons over this beauitful country is a f crime. Its gone way past pest control, its a big industry now, and this BS about plagues of rats is just that, i havnt seen one rat in the bush in the last 3 years, and the Government though DOC(their muppet) has fed the public B/s for years to continue to justify drops.
From 207000ha a couple of years ago to now over 680000ha of 1080 drops from DOC to now control rats is the joke. Its never going to control them, its proven that rats spike in numbers not long after and its a vicious cycle that will be repeated for no gain. Bird havnt increased in numbers after years of 1080 drops, and im certain its the cause of the low numbers of Kea, rock wren and other birds. Who knows what else the 1080 is doing, esp with trout, eels, crayfish and insects .....thats the point, no one knows, but bet your bottom dollar at best its not helping anything, more likely causing harm on a scale we havnt seen yet..........and people think because we are hunters its all about deer. Shame on everyone that thinks such BS

I've seen rat plagues, mice plagues, stoats have walked up to me in the bush, goat plagues, too many deer in places. To be fair hunters probably don't shoot enough deer. Poison is not nice but if we kill two birds to save ten from rats and possums we are winning. Not to mention a multi billion $ ag industry that doesn't need TB.

What I dont like about 1080 is the fact it is illegally used to target large mammals in some areas and is chucked around willy nilly for no reason in others citing beach masts that never eventuate.
Reguarly poisoned bush here is dead.. there are no birds left.
What birds are left are on privatly owned bush with all the so called predators.
