I too use heavy for calibre bonded bullets at moderate speeds, projectile pass thru lets more light into the animal and also a decent blood trail.
Tried "fast 6.5' calibre " thats all the rage and didn't go so well for me, I'm not convinced they kill as "well" as larger cals but they sure are trendy

the archers paradox is USUALLY the way an arrow starts off kinked and flys in a wobbly fashion to its target. the string forces arrow to be off to one side on an old traditional bow...not so much when bow has cut out/bent bit in middle so arrow stays straight... its a funny thing to watch in slow motion.
for deer n pigs I usually use heavy n slow up close and lighter pills out further,cause they fly flatter and are my more accurate reloads,the light ones work up close too,but I like heavy just incase of poor angle of shrubbery in the way.
go back 35 years and I used what ever was on the shelf of gun shop...stuck to same bullet weight as impact would be closer.
poke bullet in right place and it will die.
Barnes are pretty good but I don’t know if they are the optimum hunting bullet. They expand consistently into a 4 petal shape which does a lot of damage, and penetrate exceptionally well (normally exit and have high weight retention). They’re a good all rounder and a very good option if you are using a small caliber e.g. meat hunting with a 223, or bush hunting red stags in the roar with a 243Quote:

The optimum hunting bullet is probably one of the new generation bonded lead core bullets like the eld-x, which have very high BCs and are designed to give consistency terminal performance from point blank to way out there (theoretically)

8pt Sika stag shot @ 9.01pm last night @ 150m in the back of the swede with 20gr CCI 17 HMR Sako . Just folded. Shot downhill aiming top of ears.
I assume that 140gn is in 7mm calibre. All good results. Personally I'll accept a bit of damaged meat vs an animal runs and is lost any day.Quote:

Yeah if they are not shot to buggery which in my case they usually are. Therefore not worth hauling anywhere from 3+ hours to a roadend. With deer numbers the way they are im better off concentrating on edible cuts . I personally dont do mince. I have beefys for that .

Rex Forrester in his book recounting his opossum trapping days and shooting deer for meat with his .22.Some times we forget many older NZ'ers killed significant quatities of deer with "humble" rifles.

Spoke to an old farmer many years back who was involved with breaking in back country HB and indeed establishing his own farm. End of day scrub cutting quiet stroll with 22 using shorts [not sure if still common round] because that was all they had. Into the ear and cart back on the back of the tractor.
@TeRei unfortunately the old timers who tell you things like that, forget to mention how many times the bullet didn't hit the exact spot required to kill a deer with a 22 short and a deer ran away only wounded
I used factory 225 grain Hornady cartridges initially, which had a lot of speed. It spoiled the meat a lot. He had to give shots in the head or behind the paddle, so as not to lose meat, but the shots behind the paddle did not cause a quick death to the animal, unnecessary suffering. Since I started reloading, I have been using Hornady Interlock SP or RN tips, weighing 250 grains, at a speed of approximately 2300 ft / sec. They do not break the meat. I'm a cultist of African theory, heavy bullets at low speed.
Can’t say I’m an old timer, only 60,but shot my first deer with .22lr as a 15 year old. Shot a few more over the years with .22, a few with sub-sonics, but never tried with shorts. Don’t think I’d try either unless it was freaking close. Haven’t lost a deer with .22lr, have with .303. Got complacent I guess.Quote:
