if its your first gun, get a 22. it will teach you allot before you head off to centerfire

$2600 is a pretty decent start budget, you should be able to pick up a good rifle/scope combo for that. And if you havent had a lot of experience yet, then Sparrowhawk is less than hour away and has open range days each month. Great for learning and meeting guys that are like minded. And probably get the chance to play with a few different rifles before you buy.

I bought a Tikka 22-250 as my first good hunting rifle when I was 18, 47 years ago. Still got it, still shoots lights out, will never part with it.

$2600 for a setup.

GC are the big boys but take a look at other like Wilson's outdoors, seriousshooters,reloaders,gunworks, Deltamike to name but a few.

@Greyman There is a lot of valid advice here. You mention that you rae new to hunting but dont say if you are new to shooting or firearms in general. I will presume that this is the case. First get a 22LR as these are the cheapest ones to feed. It will allow you to get a lot of practice to get techniques right and get you accurate behind whatever you buy. Second, with your budget, you could easily start with a new Howa (as mentioned by @country cuts) or a number of others and still have budget for a decent scope. As a new shooter, I am not sure I would spend thousands on a top of the line scope, but get a good quality 3-9x or 4-12 or similar. For a newer shooter, one of the best investments you can make is in ammo....enough to get you a lot of practise and get comfortable shooting the firearm that you get.......

Never really had a issue buying off gun city...must be lucky or very accepting. In Saying that I do want to have a fondle first....

Buy privately if you can
There are literally hundreds of rifles on the site for sale that, for the most part, are in pretty good condition. Add to that, you'll be buying off some good bastard somewhere that will want a reasonable price, and not an inflated price from a dealer who has to cover his overheads

@Greyman FS on this forum Brno ZKK-600 270 from @time out, down to $600 and it will do everything you need it to do. The 270 had the Creedmoor hype in the 70 - 80s. Great calibre in a great rifle.

Gun pricing in NZ from most expensive, to least expensive:
- Hunting and Fishing
- Guncity
- Other small chain or privately owned gun shops
- Reloading Supplies Auckland
- TradeMe (Subject to bidding interest)
- NZ Hunting and Shooting Forum
- A mate (unless he is a prick!)
- An old fella giving up Hunting
- A deceased estate

I've bought two second hand rifles through Guncity Wellington:

- Walther 22LR which was exactly as advertised, fair market value and a good shooter
- Ruger 10/22 with Hogue stock. Again, as advertised and fair market value. There was something wrong with something inside (springs or rail pin???) and the staff swapped it out for a brand new, second hand part which someone had upgraded for an after market part, for bugger all! Great service! Highly recommend the Wellington Guncity!

BTW What calibre and brand are you looking for?

If $2600 is for the scope and rifle perhaps you have money set aside for a bipod and suppressor as well? If so I'd take a look at this, gives you far more than a beginner setup for $3400 https://www.nzhuntingandshooting.co....3-18-a-101543/

Good point made above about having a suppressor, especially if you end up buying a 270.

$1500 for all three....$400ish to have 270 suppressed at gunworks.... and still has $6-700 left for ammunition LOL.

You can buy a couple of good rigs for your budget.
Factory ammo? 308, 6.5 creed or 243 and a 223? Do Belmont ammo still load cheap and good ammo.
I wouldn't get too fussed on dial up scopes. Plenty of good scopes around $300 or $400.

Best part is when you get yourself onto an animal!
