    Which calibre for tahr?

    Hi All,

I'm planning a tahr hunt for next winter what calibre rifle would you recommend? I currently have a 7mm08 that hasn't let me down yet but I've been told it wont cut the mustard.
I'm leaning towards a 7mm rem mag. what are your guys thoughts?

From the advise I was given earlier in the year from people who have regularly hunted them, your 7mm08 will be fine, they aren't bullet proof.
Only exception may be if you are going somewhere that you expect to be shooting 400-500-600m+

Thanks Barefoot, I'm not a fan of the long range stuff 300m seems to be the limit of my capability over that its hard to place good shots.

7mm-08 will be fine. Especially if you are competent and comfortable with it.

As Barefoot said, unless you intend to be in an area where the shots are expected to be +400yds then a 7mmRM would be a good option, otherwise stick with what you have. Use the money you were going to spend on a rifle and get a decent pair of alpine boots, and good quality warm clothing. Make sure you have a decent pair of binoculars too.

    Nothing wrong with the 7-08.
Get plenty of practice in so you know your drops, as some of the shots can be quite long.
Ballistic tips or SST type bullets with good bc's will help with the longer shots and have good expansion.

I shot 2 last year with Tentman's .250 Savage at 270 odd yds, so a 7/08 will do it easy.

We should all be a bit worried if you are outwitted by a goat mate

    Anything other than 308

P.S. Apparently 6.5x55 gives you super sniper capabilities, you don't have to read wind, and any load/projectile combo is guaranteed to be a winner.
