    Calling Taranaki hunters...

Hey guys, anyone doing much deer hunting in Taranaki?

I'm very new to hunting and would love to get some blood on my first rifle I've just purchased!

Anyone know of any public spots/blocks within an hour or so of South Taranaki (Hawera's home) that may be worthwhile for a complete novice?

If anyone in the area would be so generous to provide access to any private blocks etc I'd be happy to make it worth your while as I find my feet

    TIA

DoC website has a good amount of information. You will find people more receptive if you ask specific info about places you have done research on. Buy the spot x book as well.

Hey @jaacko we do plenty of private land hunts through the North Taranaki Deerstalkers club, people tend to keep decent Naki public spots to themselves though as they are usually limited or best for one hunting group at a time.

If you send me a message, I'll point you in the right direction to a public land spot with deer if you can hack the walk. Other than that pick a doc block and explore, you'll likely find there's a few species about that aren't listed on the doc sites.

Thanks team. The message I’m getting is trains hut is worth a look!

Anyone hunted around Rotorangi? Tarere conservation area south of the lake?

How about in the Nukuhau conservation block or other blocks around that area?

Always meant to look at those blocks, ended up in the back of ruatiti, nice bit of dirt there but a bloody long drive, still good spot as last time shot a stag 50 yrds from camp.

My suggestion as well, bar the Waitara part. @jaacko those blocks you asked about are worth a look, take some time off during the week and get out for an overnighter in good weather for the best bet.

Nukuhau is steep as shit with some pretty grotty mud, plenty of nettle, and pretty tight bush with limited options for shots over 20m

lake Rotorangi access thru Tangahoe road or Ball road Ball road there is access into Tarere directly across the top of dam very limited hunting for fallow but quite a few goats - there is also access into Tarere via the Meremere track - can be locked over winter - goats really - but lake Rotorangi if you have a boat can give you access into an area with fallow bit of a walk and apparently a real shitty scrub ridge but worth it - DOC land comes right down to lake edge up from the Tangahoe ramp and above the Ski club on South side - up the ridge and you are overlooking the Whenuakura River - lots of clearings and can be good fallow numbers - between the Whenuakura thru Waitotara and down to Wanganui River is a lot of DOC blocks many land locked - most will have fallow but the real populations are on the private land next to them -- most are shitty bush with steep gullys - go door knocking

another area that is worth looking at - big area of DOC land - from the Rawhitiroa road ( turns of just North of Eltham ) at Omoana there is a road turns of to the south called the Mataiwhetu road it ends at a car park and there is legal access down the valley into the Whenuakura valley - you will need a quad or else a very long walk - the valley is big and the river is the problem - will take some time to learn where crossings are and how to get around down there - but that area does hold fallow and theres a few of them in places - big areas of manuka with clearings - wild cattle are also there mainly on south side - but worth a look

If south Taranaki has the same numbers of goats as the north and you're really new to hunting, goats would be a good place to start. I'd move to Taranaki just for goat hunting!
