    central otago goats

    hey there folks

looking at being in central first week of July, am thinking of bringing a rifle down if i can find somewhere where i can go for day walks and pick up a few goats. are there DOC areas with numbers or is a case of knowing the right station owners and getting access?

is the Lakes Council approachable for access?

yes i'm sort of asking for peoples spot X but they are goats not deer!

    Wouldn't wallabies be more likely?

Just about all of the Central Otago high country properties have goats (the more rugged the better) and it just requires a personal approach to prove you are a sensible shooter. Most of the properties do not want you to shoot the deer (Reds & Fallow). There are vast DOC areas that you can get on-line hunting permits for but they are mostly fairly light on animals.

I like .223 for them, .22mag never seems to punch hard enough to know the big ones down at any range. I have a mate who used a .22hornet that he seemed to like. Also some of those .38 and .44 lever guns do a good job.

I wouldn't use a 22 mag. Not humane. Takes a while for them to die.
