    Chamois

planning a trip down south coming down from north island and wanting to bag a chamois. Anyone know some areas that hold decent numbers of chamois. not asking for anyones spot x, just wanting to know some general areas where I wouldn't be wasting my time. If I was closer id go out and explore some areas and find out where they are but she's a pretty long way from where I am and don't won't to wast time and money to go to an area with no animals. cheers

I would try the Lewis Pass area for a start:
Not too rugged but very nice country
Have been a few Cham about in the past but not on anyone's personal hot spot list
Accessible public land with tracks and huts
Some deer and fish there too
    Enough said.
    Trout and paremata like this.

There will be some forthcoming advice re smacking a Chammy on the Mainland from a forum member, but here's a tip to break the ice.As a newby to this pub,how about the curtacy of introducing yourself (known as good form etiquette)before either A.Trying to flog some gear in the Buy,Sell section ,or,B.Quizzing up some hunting spot.Good luck

most alpine areas around the main divide have a population of chamois you just need pick an area you like the look of and go for it. the more remote you can get the better the numbers. make sure you are super fit its not easy going.

You need to drive to the end of the gravel road, over the bridge and park at the second car park on the left. Take the track up the ridge to the clearing and then climb over the windthrow.

After you come out of the bush line, sidle around all the faces glassing as you go. I shot my first Chamois over the gorge on the left by the stream , my second one in the sun below the repeater station.
