I don't think there is any set in concrete method but maybe experience.
A buck worth looking at and shooting will leave you NO doubt at first glance, same with a bull thar.
Bases generally will be thicker and they will have a more completed look to their hooks.
More pronounced compared to a nanny. Height above the ears is not something I look for but it can tick another box if you're uncertain.
Bucks are not bucks because they are alone either. I have seen bucks with kids at their feet as well.
These are both over 10" but you can see the difference in height before the curl.
As I said. A trophy buck or bull will leave no doubt on first glance as they tend to stand out from the shitloads of non trophy animals you have looked at to that point.
