Have hunted there quite a few times scince the 1080 drop which was this about this time last year. The animal numbers seem to be a lot less than there used to be but they are still there. Have found a 3 dead animals scince, one was a 8ptr.
Last time i was there was in aprill and the place was Packed with people even more that it usualy is at that time of year.

Still worth a look but keep moving till you find where they are.
    Good luck

Yeah, I used to hate the place, it gets hammered however you can shoot deer within a few hundred meters of the road (and yes I do travel further than that).

The DOC sign at the road end has some pretty nasty shotgun damage. 1 x birdshot and 1 x slug

You would think so but it suprises me how many people hunt it and shoot deer. It is feed animals by miles of pines that you are "not allowed to hunt" and Porinui station which is used for guided hunting and access is "expensive"
I have seen three deer come out of there with a front leg missing from what looks like bad shooting.
And have never driven down the road and had the place to myself...... even is mid winter with snow on the treetops.

I think there are a few trees left without holes in them!!!

Park up at heli sika carpark and take the poled route to the oamaru flats haven't been there since this time last year and really itching to go back there as soon as I can afford to get my dirty hands on a new rifle I am going to piss off there for a few nights.

It is a 3 hour and 40 minute walk through poronui including stopping for a couple of breathers and the good part is you now only have the one river crossing across the kaipo to deal with instead of the two crossings you used to have to do.

No because you are using a public carpark that is by the fenceline and you are walking in from there only time you get to park inthe HS compund is if you are being flown in and out by them, only rule is while walking in is no bolt or ammo in rifle till you are back on DOC land

Spent 2 w'ends in there in the last 5-6 weeks, still Sika in there, spooked one by 'the quarry' and one at the road end, saw two complete skeletons, so im presuming 'green rain' killed those poor buggers.....

now the roar is coming to/at an end there wont be as many hunters in there, plenty of places to park & set up camp, not just the 3 'official DOC campsites'.....get a map, its a maze in there,go for it!
While I might not be as good as I once was, Im as good once as I ever was!

Last time in there , (Oamaru public) there was lots of spotlighting going on at night. Gun shots in the dark. Saw plenty of sign. Awesome spot to walk around .
The spot lighters were pretty successful from what we saw. The early morning, daylight and dusk armed trampers not so .. Great trip though. Heaps of fun with good company..

Id love to try the Oamaru private block next time when I get rich.. That looks like a nice block also and maybe doesn't see the traffic .
