    Collective Image

A while back I made a comment on here in regard to hunters hunting in lockdown....

Something along the lines of that being disappointing, ie "not helping our collective image" This was the response I got.

Never thought much of it at the time but let me relate my most recent story to you fellas.

Arrived at the Durville hut a few days back and found it well occupied with a couple from Tauranga and a family from Christchuch. Nice folk so decided to leave them to it and head across to the Sabine.

    What a bloody mess !!

Bucket of ashes and empty beer boxes by the fire.

Even this box of crap under the bench !!

Had a look in the hut book and this was the last entry.....I thought to myself, what a sad state of affairs it must be when you have to scribble out your own names before you leave!!!! WTF

Now I'm picking that 95% of people on this forum would never leave a hut in such a state but if you happen to be reading this and are a member of 'the boyz' club. For christ sake do us all a favour and sort your shit out!!

Its not that hard to leave a hut looking like this. I know the next people will appreciate it !!

    Anyway rant over

the rubbish is inexcusable. but ashes could have been left there safely while still hot and not wanting to ditch them outside and risk fire.
also f..ing horrid taste in beer, then again could have been waikato

Struck a similar thing on Molesworth when wife and I shared accommodation with a couple of young dudes. Came back to hut to find a tree from shelter belt chopped mostly through. Had a crack at the culprit who said he was “bored”. He and his Buddy left soon after. I can’t understand why idiots travel to remote huts and muck them up.

Nice clean up job. I did the same at the beginning of spring with the D'Urville hut. We weren't staying there but on the way home took 3 banana boxes of rubbish out gave it a good swep and then left. A bit disappointing considering you have to boat in, that makes it easier to remove the rubbish.
I also don't mind the Ash in the bucket or fireplace. Better to be safe than sorry.

Yep I agree, the ash wasn't a biggie but the rubbish really pissed me off.

I'm passionate about the outdoors - always have been and if possible always try to leave the huts better than we found them.

In this case it wasn't difficult !!

As mentioned there is NO excuses, especially with the boat access !!

Its a wonderful place up there tho and the rest of the trip was great

No we didn't, its fair to say that the area has had a fair amount of pressure of late.

However despite that there is still a bit of sign about and on one occasion got we close enough to smell em !!

Unfortunately there were no takers for a free ride down the lake tho

Because they can't find normal folk, who'll tolerate them and their boorish behaviour, they think that being idiots, is an acceptable course in life.

Yeah nar the idea of hot ashes left in the galv bucket a definate no no.Personally witnessed the Anne River Hut Mk 1 St James raized for this very reason by a presumably well meaning tramp on depature leaving the vacant hut in the middle of winter. The current Mk2 replacement owes us tax payers in excess of $300k.Leave the hot ashes in the closed fire box on departure. The ash bucket is the said receptacle to transport the cold ashes to be terfed

It’s bad enough finding rubbish on the hill, but having it left in a hut is inexcusable and no matter who leaves it there I bet 99.9% of the time it’s blamed on hunters. The only thing u should leave behind is footprints and maybe a few drops of blood under a tree if you were successful
