Complaint from neigbour

The police have (or had) a policy of not acting on complaints that they consider to be vexatious or simply intended to be a nuisance.

One of the criteria that they use is the amount of time between the crime occurring and when it was reported.

This is as it was explained to me by a policeman - so things may have changed.

I would suspect and hope that your case falls into this category.

If you do however get a knock on the door from Mr Plod , you might wish to think about just being completely open with the cops : based on what you've said , you've got nothing to hide.

Just make sure you get your story right in your own mind .. nothing raises suspicion like an ever changing story ...

But for the moment, just sit tight and say nothing. You've done nothing wrong, so why dob yourself in ?

Tin foil hats work against the aliens that hover over my house every second Thursday so should work against a web surfing AO. Ha ha ha ha

A few years back on a farm that I was doing security on ,we had supposedly a couple of cattle beast shot. I was rucked up by the then Manager as to why and how this could of happened, what were they paying for etc. etc. a real dickhead. A big shut down on all firearms on the property, no one was allowed to hunt anymore and even I was a suspect. A real knee jerk reaction from the soon to be fired Manager. Any way the owners followed my advise and had an autopsy done on one of the beast and guess what? Tutu poison, they found 18 dead animals all up. I enjoyed a few more years working and hunting on the block till it was sold.

The reality we face, and have to take our share of responsibility for, is that some people don't like and/or are scared of guns. Anything which even might be irresponsible behaviour with a firearm, those people will fully exploit and embellish the nature of it and attempt to discredit firearms and all users everywhere.
This is why incidents like the young dickheads who were spotlighting from their vehicle in a public forest park who shot the teacher brushing her teeth make me so angry. The behaviour of a few who think the rules don't apply to them, affects the rest of us so badly, giving anti-gun folk something to crow about.

I also imagine that the concept of shooting Plovers for what appears to be fun, might be rather foreign to them.

Yawn away. I think the difference is perception. As you say, we have to take our measure of responsibility for the negative perceptions. Its a continuum of seriousness, but our actual behavior is at both ends.

Call me self righteous on this issue if you want Tahr, but I draw no parallel between sharing my legal pest control war on obnoxious Plovers or any other pest on a special interest forum to flagrant disregard for all and every law those guys broke when they were spotlighting for deer from a vehicle on public land without even a DoC hunting permit who failed to identify their target and then had the insensitive audacity to plead not guilty to manslaughter while the husband and family were facing the horrific loss of their wife and loved one.

As for 'perception', I agree with you. As with anything and everything I post online, I do it with a degree of trepidation as I weigh up the prospect of people who perceive it in a way which may be abhorrent or offensive and how they might react. Or to put it a different way, consider the consequences. Which is why I made the comment about that incident in particular as it was very public on national media news

Are you commenting about the Mears case ? He pleaded guilty at the first opportunity. He did something unbelievably stupid, but every time he appeared in court, looked completely devastated, and took his punishment like a man. The other guys in the vehicle may have pleaded not guilty... not sure.

The "law" is not on the side of anyone using a firearm in a way that could be seen as a nuisance.

The simple solution to the issue above would have been some door knocking and checking that all the neighbours were ok with shooting on the property.

Yes the Mears case. Splitting hairs a bit and getting off topic, but if I'm wrong and that he pleaded guilty, then I retract that, but that's not the way I remember it happening.

As for asking all the neighbours... That would be a very PC thing to do and is highly likely, anywhere in the country/world, to get at least one neighbour say they don't want shooting anywhere near their property. What then? Say "oh, ok. I'll go and shoot somewhere else then." ??

It's a very difficult subject as people feel so passionate on each side. If you ask permission from someone you don't need to ask permission from, they object and decline permission but you go and shoot anyway, you're likely to get an extreme reaction. I totally support the notion we, as gun users, need to be highly respectful, safe and considerate of all others, but everyone else also needs to exercise tolerance for things they don't support, like or agree with. I am not about to ask for permission from neighbours to discharge my firearms on my own land in the country. Instead I have suggested they just need to ask that I abstain if they need me to for any particular reason, such as horses in the yards or stable etc. Works for us anyway.
