"Could deer hunters ease the UK's hunger crisis?" video

An interesting, pretty balanced and non sensational video about whether deer hunters could ease the UK's hunger crisis. Interestng to hear the "I couldn't eat Bambi" statements from some people

@Trout Don't worry; I give away the majority of my meat, eggs and veges to folk who need it! I just posted it because it was an interesting vid..... And... nice to see something on mainstream tv that isn't anti hunter or sensationalist

I went back to see family for the first time in years last July/August helping with grain harvest on the family farm 30 miles north of London.

I saw more deer on this visit than ever compared to the previous 40 years. Occasionly used to see Muntjac and knew they were always around but this time saw numerous Fallow and even one that confused me for a while which turned out to be a Chinese Water Deer. Yes the supplies would run out much sooner than here but definitely been a change in the old country with changed farming practices (wilding etc) and government/councils not spending on clearing scrub land due to cut backs.

Nice to see areas I know well in that video. I don't know any family or friends who would turn up their noses at eating venison. The benefit of a rural upbringing over there I guess

It’s not ok to eat wild venison but it’s ok to eat chicken ( probably not free range)
    The mind boggles

Exactly. Wild animals wouldn't dent food security requirements for 70 million people and based on the clip at the start, the deer would have to be prepared for the halal market. Still, good to see a story that is positive about hunting, especially from The Guardian.

I thought wearing hard hats to butcher a deer was a bit over the top

cop a hook in the head and you may change your mind on that -Grandad got flattened at the smoko table by a quarter of beef hung up alongside table on a rack - very old fashioned butcher shop in Gisborne - Mon morning 2 cattle beasts in quarters about 10 pigs and 8 mutton all hung up in an area not much bigger than the average kitchen until processed into chillers - and out back for hams and bacon
