Endangered wildlife is good for business, don't you think? The tourism industry profits. The government profits. We thrive, but the animals just linger.

Why don't we focus on maintaining and monitoring the wildlife which DOES thrive in this ever changing, human dominated world? A preventative approach as opposed to a restorative one.

It's a flawed logic and one which seeps into many facets of society. It's like we cannot accept the reality of what we are as a species. On one hand we want more, more, more, but on the other -- we want to hang onto the very creatures which have dwindled in the wake of our greed? If greed is a human trait, perhaps we should accept that certain wildlife will not thrive alongside us.

Extinction must exist for a reason, right? It's a natural phenomenom which ensures all life is able to cope with the fluctuating conditions of this planet. Out with the old, in with the new. It's been going on for millions upon millions of years. But we're so arrogant to think that 'we' (a tiny blip on this planet's evolutionary timeline) can somehow 'decide' that extinction will not/should not happen, and that we can 'choose' what gets to live? Even though nature has made it very clear that by virtue of our progression as a species, many other species have had to/will continue to perish...??

I have nothing against saving wildlife. I love nature. If anything I think it does us a lot of good (it teaches us compassion; respect for our resources; gives us opportunities to work together for a larger cause)...but 'saving the planet?' What sort of bullshit is that?

We're part of nature too. We're a destructive species. We crave the benefits which come with exploiting resources on an immense scale. That's what we are and that's what we do.

Wildlife sanctuaries are great. They're windows into the past. Small, localized populations of endangered animals are a nice novelty. It adds value to our artificial existence. But the idea that we can turn back the clock is ludicrous. It'll do more harm than good.

Sorry for the over used idiom but it will be a cold day in hell before I give any money to those twig and tweet self righteous scum. Really enjoyed a few years ago when one of them came to my door collecting, he heard a few choice words!
If they had their way every deer, thar, chamois and pig would be 1080'd or shot slowly (with a single shot bolt action rifle of course given today's pandering BS).
I take pleasure in telling the countdown checkout person why "no! I'm not using my onecard and here's the reason why!"
I went to new world today and made a point of asking the checkout people what charity their clubcard gives to. Doesn't seem to be any, googled it as well.

I got a reply from them saying they chose to support a wrthy charity. I replied that Forest and Bird is more of a political lobby group than a charity, meaning countdown now is now supporting political lobby groups and as such I will not support their brands at all.

At this rate you principled people are going to end up with no where to shop. Countdown, Swazi, Hunting & Fishing ...

Gun City used to be on the list, but they seem to have swung back into favour. You are a fickle lot

I even remember a previous "great banning" of Hunting & Fishing, now it seems they are "re-banned".

@Tahr your version of moderating our volatility seems to center around being passive. If this is true, what do you see us gaining from a passive citizenry? If we were all to become completely passive, where would we be 34 years from now when I am your age?

@Tussock No, we ought never have a passive citizenry. In fact I believe that positive change is generated through a manageable level of conflict. Strong debate underpins a healthy democracy. If we were all passive, society would stagnate.
Don't confuse my approach as being one I want to imprint onto others. I'm happy for others to have the conflict, and I'm happy to help manage it.

I also like to encourage a prismatic view of things as opposed to a binary one. Accordingly, I often find myself marooned in the middle unable to take a strong view on issues. At times I don't like being like that that very much.

Rushing new laws in lightning time with no due process is not living in a "healthy democracy"

@Sasquatch it could be a lot less healthy.

What are these "due process" breaches?? A breach of our Bill of Rights? Parliament in contempt?

Or simply just a feeling of being shafted?

The citizens got together a petition of 60,000 signatures in a few days demanding changes to gun laws. We couldn't even get a petition off the ground.

The Order in Council must now be consulted on, debated and brought into legislation. We will have plenty of opportunities to state our case. But yes we have lost the first round, albeit that that does not mean it hasn't been democratic.

Thar I’ll go with the shafed feeling
But my bulk buy for Stewart Island did NOT come from countdown nor will the perishable buy in Invercargill come from them
As for the rest of the crap that I’m watching unfold here, I just feel very sorry for my nieces and nephews who won’t get to experience what we had as kids. Man I’ve had some fun, hopefully they have some too but I doubt it will be as I had it
It's all fun and games till Darthvader comes along
I respect your beliefs but don't impose them on me.

Anyone got any more info on Countdown giving money to the twig and tweet do-gooders? Is Countdown using the Onecard to give money to these pricks or just giving them money in general?
I wrote to Countdown asking are they using the Onecard thing to donate to f and B and got no reply. I'm a bit worried Countdown is just giving money to these pricks directly. I've been shopping at Countdown under the belief they're using the Onecard and when asked if I have Onecard I tell them with great pleasure "I do have one but don't use it".
Am I being thwarted by the belief that only the Onecard is used to donate?
If they're just giving money to these assholes directly I'll shop elsewhere.
I am a believer in not using plastic bags but don't want bloody f and b telling me what to do or give them money.
