    Couple of firsts

I was offered the opportunity to have an armed wander around a Southland farm, and jumped at the opportunity.
I have been wanting to shoot a fallow for some years, and finally ticked it off! This wee guy was shot kneeling unsupported from 250m. Sadly my shot wasn’t amazing but was enough to put it down. The round hit way back, and it smashed through the bone of one hind quarter and went right through and lodged into the other side. Either the bullet or the grenade of bones punctured the gut bag, so both back quarters were pretty much a write off I managed to salvage some meat from them, but most was wasted.

I did get the loons and straps though, and got what I could from the front legs.

First time I have found the bullet in the animal too

On my way to get the deer, a mob of goats presented themselves and I obligingly culled 6 of them would have gotten more but I ran out of rounds!

The weather was horrendous all day, constantly raining/sleeting/snowing. Am now cozy in front of the fire with a beer!

You were actually still in Otago, just. Personal experience has shown me the quickest way to improve your shot placement is to ruin a hind quarter or two! Happens to us all. Glad you had a good day.

Hey, you got your first fallow and some meat to take home. Most of us have at least one shot on an animal that could have been a lot better and have learnt from it. As Micky said, a better rest at that range next time.

They ended up dead in the end Micky. Don't be so hard on yourself.

Thanks so much for having me! I have been cooped up for the last few months and this was a much needed stretch of the legs, not even the weather could put me off!

This is my first time shooting with a lower mag scope, so that came into the equation too. Think I had it set to 4x at the time. Was a rushed shot as they had seen me, so didn’t have the time to setup properly I’m happy with the outcome though! Animal on the deck, and venison in the fridge
