The guiding position will only be when they have clients, so late Feb - May. Possibly decent gaps between clients, $35 per hour starts to look pretty average. High fence guiding, not everybody's cup of tea. Basically a BS game for BS income.

My next comment was going to be didn't the police just round up all the headhunters?

Always wondered what guncity staff got paid and if they had commission.
Always thought sales would be an interesting job when I get sick of building.
Building has a surprising amount of salesmanship involved, Always chatting with clients and coming up with the best solution for them

The head guide although pretty low pay at $35/hr is still better than a lot of work out there. Something to note though is Americans generally will tip and can tip very well for gig's like this. Wouldn't be surprised if it was in the thousands if the trip was a once in a lifetime experience.

Don't know about GC but JB hifi staff are on commission and Mitre10 staff certainly are not, M10 shop staff not much above minimum, but drive thru staff are quite a bit higher if you have F endorsement. Not as much as building though and it can get tedious when dealing with non tradies.

I get it's not everyone's dream job, and the pay rate is probably low, but as someone who's highly likely about to get the axe, I'm very aware there's fuck all jobs out there above minimum wage right now, and more pain to come, so a lot of people don't have the luxury of choosing. I'm in the process of getting my WTR endorsement so I can go from sitting at a desk to sitting on a digger if that's what I need to do to make enough money to keep paying my mortgage.

Obviously that's just my current sphere - interested to hear what others are experiencing?

If you have class 4 or class 5 licence there are jobs a plenty out there.just about every truck firm is short staffed. LOTS of foreign drivers being imported just to keep bums in seats.

If you want a driving job then there is always seasonal rural work building up to peak harvest time at the end of summer?

Everyone I talk to say it is flat - commercial construction - but there always seems to be traffic control/STMS jobs about for people who want to stand around and get fat

If you want a short learning curve time to good money fire engineering is worth a look - open polytech do courses. Boring but can pay well

I have to say I was shocked at how poor the guiding rate was.
It’s a specialised job with some very specific industry skills. Seems unreasonably low, unless you’re living on site in free accommodation and meals are provided.
    Plus tips, then ok.
Ive got mate’s contract culling who get $65 p/h.

Sadly the guiding industry has allowed for tipping to become part of a guides income now. For years tips were always classed as a bonus because we dont have a tipping culture here. Sometimes they were big, sometimes they werent. Sometimes the outfitter got a big tip just cos hes the outfitter, and the guy on the ground got FA. Sometimes the outfitter didnt take anything and the guide got some decent coin. But to rely on tips to bolster your income is asking for trouble, particularly in the NZ guiding scene. Tips should be seen as a bonus , not necessary but welcome. And now IRD and the banks have made it very hard to accept tips in cash, particularly if youre earning bugger all for the actual guiding. They want to know how you can survive and pay a mortgage and buy some toys when your income is only $35 per hour and you only "work" maybe 4 days a week, or 20 days a month.

Not up this way at the moment, things are dead in the water. Trec have closed up shop again and the council aren't much better. loggers are slow.
