Crap Bivvy in the Bush

I've hunted a particular area for several years now and have found, of late, that someone else has found the same area.

They have brought in all of their gear and stored it in 20L buckets nearby and erected a "shanty" of a tarp set-up in black polythene plastic over the only suitable tent areas on the site. Together with thi the amout of rubbish left behind whenever "old-mate" turns up has increased dramatically.

It's on public land in the kaimanawas = how does one go about reminding him to clean up his shit?

Leave him a bit of a reminder written on the lid of his buckets maybe he will get the message

Somehow leave a message that if he doesn't sort his housework that DOC will be given the map coordinates of his shanty.
Far too many lazy p..cks now leaving rubbish in the bush, on the hills. It's disgusting, unhygienic and visual pollution. Perpetrators need to get the memo that it won't be tolerated.

I agree, sort it as soon as you can, a former landlord when I was living in Whangarei and discovered a 'camp' on his bush property had me helping him rinsing the site at 2am with a garden hose lol.

Collect all the rubbish, pack it into one of his buckets if there is room, without soiling his other gear. Pack down the shanty, stack the tarps/polythene tidily with his buckets. A fairly respectable way to let him know that he does not own the place.

Good idea, but I'd be concerned about getting sprung while packing up the guys' gear. Potential to go sideways.
Personally I'd give the GPS/map coordinates to DoC and let them deal with it.

personally id have a bonfire if its wet bush soon get the message , discovered some amazing bivvys/ camps and huts with fireplaces and everything nice and tidy in the kaimanawas, if someone wants to shit up the bush then why give a shit about their crap

There is nothing flash about it at all, I think I'll carefully disassemble and leave it with the other gear. Collect the rubbish and stack it with their other gear.

Could just be a bunch of kids (judging by the construction skills..) and burning up all their shit probably isn't a good way to encourage healthy use of the outdoor resource. Just write a note to hopefully educate whoever it is and remember that they don't own the place, and neither do you.

3 possible options.

1) Remove all traces of the camp then leave a polite note in its place explaining why.

2) Re-engineer the bivvy, tidy up all the surrounding rubbish and remove all surplus and dirty gear, then use it for yourself as well if it is an area you would normally camp in.
Also leave a polite note explaining as to why you've done what you've done.

3) Remove all traces of the camp.

Could it be a homeless person?

I think if it's still there next time you visit a match might be needed.

We see it here too occasionally.

Edit: A new trend here is to buy cheap tent, gear etc. Go camping for a few days then just go home leaving all the gear behind. :wtfsmilie:

yup i have destroyed afew tents left behind on clements mill road, making space for other hunters to stay during the roar

As Oldbloke said buying cheap gear and leaving it behind is becoming a common theme. Just look at the aftermath at concerts etc. Korea has a problem with people doing this on holidays but the local councils can't just dump the items, they pack them up and try to find the owners and that costs even more.

I can assure yo I never feel like I own the bush. And treat it and the animals I take from it with the care and respect they deserve. Just get dissapointed that someone that's taken the 2+ hrs to walk into this area doesn't feel the same way.

Can't disagree with that proposal. Balanced and reasonable and if the guy isn't hopelessly stupid the message might register.
I applaud your general attitude.

I recall a tale of woe a year or three back on old forum. Fine fella and his even finer four footed hunting buddy were up in tops hunting and came back to camp to find water gone and pot crapped in.... NOBODY deserves to come back to find camp is gone...might be cold n damp when they get there..so indeed pack it up tidy like but please don't burn it or destroy it completely.

It would depend on the state of the place for me, I could pack it up nicely or if the place is is a hell of a state with rubbish and shit everywhere fuk them I wont feel like being nice about it. I like to treat the bush so you cant even tell Ive been there

yes we flew out a lot of crappy old camps when I was a Ranger - I would not pull it down- only because they could walk in without any camping gear and then wet night - they don't really deserve that consideration - make up a note and laminate it - "clean up your camp you are giving hunters a bad name - if this camp is not pulled down and removed - we will do it - or something like that -

few discrete wee knicks of the plastic with a pen knife-just enough to irritate with the constant drip -hopefully the hint will be taken.if not and its still there well enlarge em slightly on your next visit .dont clean up the crap they leave -youre a hunter not their fucking chambermaid or mother !of course should you discover an adress or contact vdetails amongst the detritus well...illleave it up to your imagination. tho facebook is rather fetching!!!

I’ve always been curious about the general consensus on the topic of bivvies and people building huts in the bush. Is it considered taboo? For the record, I’ve never done it myself.

Was thinking of heading in next weekend after work, if you want a hand to pack it down flick me a message.

Found a pretty decent well established hut in the northern kaimanawas last year looked like it had been there for years, was very clean around it so just had a look and moved on.

DOC regard them as taboo. Have heard sometimes they send teams in to dismantle a few that have sprung up but I don't think their budgets cover more frequent missions so they might not be winning the campaign.
Personally they annoy me. I kinda live by the belief I should take only game ( deer, chamois, tahr, pigs ) and leave only footprints. If I want to camp I carry gear in and pack it all out at trips end.

The most annoying thing is that a hunter settles on what he thinks is a decent hunting spot and brings in all the paraphernalia ( consisting largely of plastic items ), sets up a permanent camp that he probably visists for a year or two maybe until becoming bored with hunting there and desiring newer pastures. Then instead of dismantling and removing the camp and accumulated equipment just moves out and leaves it all to slowly break down in the weather and become a polluting pile of crap. For crying out loud, we're hunters and should be showing our hunting environment a damn sight more love and respect than that.

well said mate -- we flew a lot of crap out when I was in Te Urewera -- the tuhoe land down the Whakatane was especially bad - a lot probably still there we did not touch anything on their land - odd decent camp but a lot of black plastic - Waioeka was bad to but mainly old possum camps

While it riles me when I come across a messy hunter camp, be it a possum deer or pig hunter camp, one has to remember that hunters have been building these camps for as long as we’ve been hunting in NZ. While it may piss you off to find a camp in the middle of nowhere, messy or not, just remember that if recently used the occupiers May not be too happy if they catch you dismantling/ vandalising it. Not that I’ve built one in years I have used them on the odd occasion. Just remember that until recently a lot of the camps on Stewart Island and elsewhere were exactly this style of camp, some messy as fuck and rodent infested. There’s modern huts at most of those sites now so obviously on good sites. As an aside some DOC huts I come across piss me off because of the state some trampers/hunters leave them in, a lot of them seem to be DB, Tui or Cody’s drinkers. Overall I’m a bit ambivalent about the semi-permanent hunter camp setup.
