    Day hunt around Nelson/Richmond

    Hey

Just up at Mapua for a holiday over the breaks. Got my rifle with me.

Haven't got heaps of time, just a day hunt. More of a tops hunter.

Can anyone point me in the general direction?

    Thanks

Graham valley real handy to Mapua, can drive up to carpark, then walk up to Mt Arthur (past hut) over towards gordons pyramid, can make a round trip of it by coming back down Cloustons mine track, the odd red and fallow

Real guns start with the number 3 or bigger and make two holes, one in and one out

Hi all you Top of the South Dog Hunters,

What is the front country like on Mt Arthur to hunt with a deer indicating dog, from the DOC Dog Access maps it looks like its ok up to 1-2kms back into the east side of Mt Arthur/Whangapeka up to sort of John Reid Hut area, give or take.

Any good or does it get dogged by pig hunters too much, assume with the fallow they like that front country anyway, close to grass.. she all looks pretty steep except for a few spurs.

Still trying to decide if we relocate to Nelson/Tasman area this coming year if I can find a house... Big part of the decision is having good access to hunting with the dog, trout fishing and ok sea fishing, so doing my research on areas to hunt with an indicating dog.

    Cheers

to my knowledge dogs are not allowed in lakes national park or kahurangi .
Maybe if the dog has done the kiwi aversion course ???

We are struggling a little to find doc land we can hunt the dog for deer/goats .... and have been told both those options are a big no-no

    Hi mate,

Last year when we were down visiting I got a permit from the Nelson DOC office, in it it had maps of the richmond ranges, National Parks, Able Tasman NP and Lakes area that showed where you could hunt with a Dog, some of it in the NPs was day hunts only like the front country of Arthurs Range and Able Tasman.

Maybe in real life its a bit different with access? Send me a PM with your e-mail and I will e-mail the maps I got from DOC.

    Cheers FBD

DOC website indicates 18 areas that allow dogs for hunting in Nelson/Tasman area. Some will be day hunting only, not overnighting.

    Its easy as
    Contact the relevent area office,
They will want your Name, Address, Dog name, Breed, Sex, Council Rego Number.
They will issue Dog Permit and it will last for 4 months.
Its a bit painful as you get an online hunting permit for yourself for whole South Island in one go then have to email 5-6 different offices individually for dog permits for their little area's but it is what it is.

Worst bit and reason to stay home is the bloody wasps. Dogs tend to stumble into them more than us.

    @Fat belly Dog

Some of these areas are closed to hunting at this time of year for obvious reasons ie Able tasman.

Plenty of opportunities for hunting with a dog in the murchison/st Arnaud conservation area also. Some very productive areas in here.

No point moving tho as we have rubbish sea fishing and no trout fishing for miles

Funny or not so funny Wasp story about 15 years ago hunting the Te Ureweras after all the snow damage we were bashing through this area that was terible, covering less than 1km per hut under over windfall. Stood on a wasp nest and they went bonkers, I gapped it out of there and covered about 500m in 5 mins, my mate behind me copped about 20 plus wasp stings to his back of legs neck.. Lucky he wasnt allergic

Every trip after that we carried antihistamine tablets and ointment and a PLB... We still joke about it to this day about how fast we could get through wind fall when chased by angry wasps.

Those are the maps I have, cheers

Wasps are so bad for people but most dogs have no idea what they are and how to hide.
Get badly stung not nice. Make sure you carry antihistamines for you and you pooch

About to try and get my wee girl on 4 legged game but will wait until its a bit cooler.
