Thread: Day walk in huts in otago

Howdy, trying to find somewhere to walk in and spend a night around Otago/West Coast. Doc websites not giving me much lead way. Keen to try chase red, chammy and tahr. We have a high level of fitness and experience just struggling to find a hut within a days walk in the general area cheers

With a ‘high level’ of experience this shouldn’t be an issue. You can read a topo map yes? Scan the topos in the general areas you’re keen on until you find a hut that appears accessible from a road-end, search that hut on the doc site, and hit the ‘getting there’ drop-down. “4-5 hours walk from carpark via track” etc. Then for more info search up the related hunting area also on the doc site “x valley hunting” and that page will tell you what animals might be found.

There’s plenty of relevant info on the DOC site, so what are you really asking? Do you just want people to give you their favourite spot?
