    Deer Identification

Hi all, during lockdown I've been arranging all my photos and came across a 2014 trip into Lake Waikaremoana (Te Urewera NP). My friend shot a small stag and it had an unusually large white arse. I've always wondered if was something other than a red deer. See attached photos. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

Looks like a red to me.

Another for red. Looks like he has died with the patch flared out.

I second that. But he also has the longest/hairiest tail that I've ever seen on a red.

Hmm, doesn’t seem ‘chunky’ enough in the leg department for a fuss. (From my frequently vague memory!)

Could he be a red sika hybrid. Looks like there may be a lighter patch were on sika the white metatarsal gland is below the hock, the longer tail and the darker ring around the rump. I don't know if you get the odd sika in the te urewera Park. Just a thought

Funny this subject has jumped up now as I’m looking at doing my DS1 here in the uk.
I’ve held off doing it as being a stubborn Kiwi and self reliant who needs a ticket to hunt deer?
But this dose open a few more doors on this small crowded island.
Anyway with a few different species you never know! Also identification before squeezing the trigger is paramount!

Have a crack at the free test here and see how you get on. Yep there are 3 species that are not in NZ but I guess you might find it interesting.
