    DEER near Blenheim

    Kiaora team,
I'm down in Blenheim for the week, possibly moving here later in the year. Just wondering if there any any deer around here on PUBLIC LAND (this will affect my part of the decision to move haha)... All the doc sites seem to think numbers are low and I suck at finding deer in areas where numbers are decent! Any general areas for me to go for a look in not too far (1.5 hr max) from Blenheim would be appreciated!
    Cheers
    Tom

I did hear that there used to be a lot of deer around Blenheim but most of them are over Nelson way now. That'd probably be a better place to look, or even Nth Canterbury.
Failing that, have a look up the head of the Leatham.

There are a shit load in Nelson, and there is a really good fella on here that I'm sure wouldn't mine helping you out. @veitnamcam I think his forum name is. All the best to you, it will be good to welcome a North Islander down here

The problem with hunting in Blenheim is getting access to the DoC land. Most is landlocked by farms and access through the farms is impossible. You can chopper in to all/some of the DoC blocks.
I found Doc Renwick pretty good for advice.

There’s deer around but you need get right back deep bush away from the roads and tracks beyond where the pig hunters go, unless you get into a spot that hasn’t been dogged for a while.

Yeh wasn`t sure if Nelson Lakes had been Chopper bombed or not. The other 2 parks close to me are at the stage I feel sorry for the deer and are now reluctant to hunt them. Bugger all left in Abel Tasman, were never very many to start with.

Yep I hear yah, no point going in & removing any of the few that remain

Especially the fallow, its not like they move in or pass through from miles away like the Reds

thinking of heading up the black birch track into ferny gair. Does anybody know if this closes for lambing to walkers (not 4wd)? I wasn't able to find anything anywhere! if not i'll just head down and see if there's signs up and if it is closed go for a fish somewhere
