Was just fooling about on the net looking for something, and bumped into an old argument (at the other pub) over the 2506 and it's ability, some prat called Shore something or other, flat out putting down the 25odd, claiming among other things that the .25 couldn't be got over about 2900fps with 120gn bullets, and that you couldn't use it on Wapiti, Wildman and Lapuaman put the case for it, cause they know the truth, but having talked to a couple of guys recently up the same valley as me chasing Tahr, carting a 300 Win and a 338Lap, who were astonished you could hunt Tahr with a .257 cal, I wonder how many still hold the same miss conception. Starting to think that with the way it's going, we are going to start seeing crewed weapons and/or pintel mounted with armour piercing laser guided, cause them animals have evolved to grow armour and have developed specialist avoidance techniques so they can only be shot from several hundred metres away
The 2506 was killing game the size of Elk in the states nearly a hundred years ago, under a couple of different names until it got standardised, Remington commercialised it in 1969, and every major manufacturer has chambered it since. In a proper length barrel (not 22") it is no drama to get 3200fps with a 120gn and 3400 with a 100gn bullet, My current rig happens to be my favourite tops hunting rifle, (and I have a .270 and a 7mm Mag). My longest shot on a Tahr with a 2506 was 480yds with a 117 Sierra Prohunter doing 3250, Tahr travelled about 5yds backward and expired. Adult bull about 120 kg.
Up near ANP last weekend testing the dial up on my new 6.5x55, took the .25 along just for the hell of it, we had a few steel plates up, 10mm mild steel, not superdooper bis stuff, but the .25 with a 117 Prohunter did this at 275
Hands up .25 users, am curious to see just how many around here use and understand just how good it is
