Bit of clarification; South-eastern Ruahine feed belt and equally well used game trails on either side / above & below and crossing at right angles Sometime I'm on the most defined one within the viewing area, but just as often not. Viewing angle as I move through the bush concentrating on probably 45 degrees either side of in front, trying as best I can to visually penetrate the bush in the current view as we go...a few paces then stop, looking, repeat, or pausing when a new area comes into view - when cresting a rise etc, the usual stalking technique I believe. Sure I see a few moving off having been spooked to the side but mostly DIRECTLY in front of me, whether sidling or stalking down or up...very odd. Anyway is looks like I must be missing the ones off to the sides somehow...just need to figure out how it's happening. Most likely the natural tendency to move towards & between clearer areas where the deer are also more likely to be holding and be seen as per Bagheera's post.
