Thread: deer sign? Reading the subtle clues.

This tree was almost 4m tall yesterday. Something appears different.



This one is also not quite as healthy as yesterday.



And the same pattern is repeated fairly widely. I think there was some reason why some farmers don't like deer... venison is another story altogether.

Yeap, watched a young fallow buck the other day out in a crop paddock tonging up a baleage bale that had been set out in position ready for winter. Went and had a look at it today and he’s bloody wrecked it, torn all the plastic and destroyed its integrity. Tis the scrappy season

The more they eat, the bigger they get, the tastier they eat. If only there wasnt as much damage done to natives. Its like they need to encourage hunters some more.

Most likely a young stag that’s not near the hinds yet, or has been kept away from the hinds

A mature stag will be more likely to be nearer the girls, more singular in his purpose

Their scent awareness is heightened at the moment, they often pick on highly scented foliage.

Maybe all those lost Westland/Fiordland Moose are hiding in coastal HB where no one thinks to look for them? I have seen a couple of monstrous shaggy beasts out the back paddock a few times (maybe once every 2 years or so), but had assumed they were wapiti or hybrids escaped from some farm. Moose eh? I like it. But a red stag is still slightly higher probability of being the culprit.

I thought there were some farmed elk in the HB?

Happy to do a couple of shifts on the stake out for you Ben. Coffee and donuts tho. Gotta piss you off to see your hardwork peeled out like that. He'll just move to the next tree and so on...

This could be a great way of meeting some other forum members, I'd be a starter to do a stakeout shift @Ben Waimata, be a bit of fun.
