Any caliber is legal here BH.

Id recommend any common cal based on the 308 or 3006 cases.
    With a bias towards 308,7mm08

No but is on private and might as well be on public land(any centerfire rifle) so that includes 17cal. Which i don't think anyone would recommend as a deer rifle.

Its not what you hit them with, its where you hit them, I remember my first deer, shot it with a 270, shot was slightly rear of the front shoulder and to my dismay it bolted.
Searched for two hours before finally locating it. The red had run about 100m and fallen under an old log. I was convinced the good old 270 would stop them in their tracks instantly but not so all the time. Had a few different calibers and ended up with a 243. Haven't had one run away even with this small caliber but I make sure I get the shot dead right or I don't bother taking it. I agree with others though, 308 is a good all rounder and have also mates that rave about the 6.5 x 55
