6.5x55 is a pretty good first cal. In saying that I started with a .303 not that I killed anything with it but have shot a couple of deer with my brothers and they dropped just like any I've shot with the 6.5
Ive already decided if I get back into hunting lark and need a better rifle I am gonna look for a Husquvana (spelling) M1600 in 6.5x55
Real rifle with blued steel / wood and prices I have seen all pretty good value for money.
