I have been looking at this area for a while. If anyone one has a contact for the land owners in this are so I can access this part of the Ruahines that would me greatly appreciated!
Cheers.

I'd reccomend taking a drive and knocking on some doors, talking to the locals. The area is getting worse and worse for private land owners not allowing access to the national park alongside everyone who "has been hunting there for 10-15 years" and wants to protect their interests. It's a big area, heaps of deer just about meeting the right person to get the ball rolling.

Looks like there's public access up the Makawakawa stream according to WAMS but I don't know if it's walkable as I've never been in the area.
The forks hut area is not that big Diggers is easy access off the Takaparai road.
There is a few groups of regular hunters that have been hunting forks for years and the landowner feels there is enough hunters going in there as well as they are a hunting family which is why they don't give out their number.

It's attitudes like these that are ruining hunting access and access for everyone into the ruahines.
Thinking just because you regularly hunt it, its not that large and the landowner is "managing" who hunts in there is absurd.
Public land is for the public and owners who willfully block people from accessing these places should be ashamed.
You obviously haven't tried to access diggers from Takapari Road in the last 5 years.

So if you were a land owner would let any random just drive over your farm and leave gates open and spot light on your farm like some have just to gain access to doc land.
There is nothing to stop you walking up Takaparai road or going to doc land from any of the road ends.

You said the reason was they feel there is enough hunters and they're a hunting family, idiots are everywhere and some simple management would solve those problems like a conversation.
It sounds like a few just wanting to keep a public hut to themselves but hey justify it how you wish.

Attitudes like yours are a significant part of the reason a number of land owners will not allow access across their properties.
If you really need to get to Forks, take a helicopter.
Although I can't remember if there is a landing site there.
I haven't been there since the late eighties.
One bit of advice I was given by a guy who was staying there once, don't go down the river thinking it's an easy way out to the bush edge. Go up on to the ridge and follow the track. He reckoned the creek was treacherous. I always followed his advice so aren't sure if his information is correct.
Overkill is still dead.
Manawatu NZDA do the maintenance on Forks and Te Ekaou huts. I've never been there myself and don't know any members that hunt it regularly . I know the Forks hut had a paint job done awhile back and getting access for that was ok, but the Farmer knows the guys going in there which makes it easier, but i believe still takes some organising prior to going there.
