    Disappointing

Hi guys. Bit of a venting post sorry. Went for a good wander last Wednesday into the castle hill side of the Torlesse range. Used to be a good spot, now there's a truck or two there most weekends. That bits ok though, the really disappointing thing is the amount of rubbish I've been finding in the hills there and taking out with me . Met a nice young couple during the roar there and was impressed with how they spoke and their manners. On my way out they had already left and unfortunately left rubbish at their tent site. Obviously that changed my opinion of them. On that trip when I got back to the car park a ford ranger with a small dog had thrown an empty tin of dog food into the river bed. Now back to last Wednesday, I sat at my normal glassing ridge about 6kms in and found two vortex bino lense covers and also fruit burst rubbish sitting in the tussock. Fu*king disappointing to say the least. If they were yours and you're reading this then shame on you and sort ya shit out.

    Vent over .

I hear ya Tim, walking in just this weekend, and someone got had a perky one 5 or 6 days ago just 20 min from the carpark.
They carried the whole carcase out, a Sika stag, head, lungs, heart, liver and all. But the muesli bar wrapper was just too heavy

Hey man sorry to hear about all the rubbish I too am finding more rubbish and crap in the hills like you are . It's very disappointing and I always do my best to carry out what I can . Sometimes though mistakes do happen as I was in a fiordiland block this year and I picked up soo much rubbish from previous parties where they deliberately tried to burn dehy packets etc but the accidents come when I had a paid of sunglasses flicked off my head while walking without realizing and could never find them and also my gf with me left my vortex bino covers behind by accident several hours away from the hut she must have left them on the log we were glossing from . I tend to have a scout before I leave for anything I may have not picked up. But unfortunately I didn't see them. So if you still have them and they are for the eye end of vortex binos I would be happy to take them off your hands

1976. Tararuas. Two young boys started off to do a main range crossing from the Ohau river. They failed to turn up on the other side Sunday evening.

We tracked them from by their boot prints and bum indentations in the snow and the crap they dropped all along the way. All the way from Te Matawai hut up onto the snowy tops and along to where they turned off the tops and dropped off to Carkeek ridge hut, where sensibly they stayed put.

Every hour we would get on the HF radio to Search HQ and let them know what sweet wrappers, or cup of soup sachets we had found, Search HQ would ring mum and mum would say 'Yes, I packed those chicken cup o soups for them...'

Unfortunately about 20% of people are grubby bastards. They may know they are grubby bastards and don't give a shit, or they may just be blind to their own fouling of our pristine wild places.

Still, like you, it pisses me off immensely.

Sadly all too common, our local river bed is full of pig parts including complete animals, deer bones and skins, fish remains , the plastic they were wrapped in.
Sadly the worst offenders it seems are hunters and fisherman (saltwater).
Then there is the trailer loads of garden and general waste ontop of that. Words fail me honestly.
Why drive 10km+ into the country to dump your shit!!

On the subject, a mate of mine from Masterton tells me all of Masterton’s rubbish is transported to Wanganui? Tauranga’s goes to Hamilton. The carbon foot print of the trucks must be huge? Mine you I saw 4 buses go through Cameron Rd/11th Ave corner last Sunday, they had 1 passenger between them!

It's the same all over unfortunately, went for a walk today in the rimutakas and rubbish everywhere, also fresh goat skins at the car park, not hard to at least throw that stuff back in the bush so it's not visible from the road

Unfortunately trampers are becoming the same, I never used to see much rubbish but nowadays it's becoming quite disgusting. Not sure if it's just the increased numbers of people or just a worsening attitude in general.

Best thing would be if all product Bar codes could be linked back to the Eftpos etc electronic payment - would capture 95 %, then instant $500 fine. Get Macka's and KFC etc packages along the road here all the time

as a Ranger the rubbish we picked up - very satisfying when one found old bills- doctors invoices etc and could pin it back on someone - even better the reaction when they were confronted -but many on here are right the cost of getting rid of rubbish does lead the great unwashed to take the easy option - sad one operation we did at a rural Scenic Reserve much of the rubbish we could trace was from locals - We used to do a flying operation in Te Urewera to all our remote pads- camp sites and in a week fly out at least 6 helicopter loads - a lot of that was black polythene left behind - but a lot of cans etc to

The worst over here are the tourists shitting on the tracks and in the streams. Followed by the camper van wankers opening the septic tank on the side of the road instead of paying to do it at the many places provided. They have done it down my road a few times and its getting to be a bit of a problem, they dont want to pay for a camp ground so they park up on the side of the road, then empty the tank before they leave.

Its pretty much always Germans too for some reason?

It does my head in. People carry stuff into the bush full but can’t carry it out empty.

Nelson council charged me $60 for a small trailer load of rubbish, its not much in the grand scheme of things as we budgeted rubbish removal in our reno budget, but for some people the simply won't pay it.

Went to the Nelson dump as its cheaper than the nearer Tasman one that charges by weight and was going to be driving past the Nelson one anyway to pick something up once trailer was empty.

Dealing with waste is costly, buying land, building infrastructure, maintaining all the different aspects of a land fill. Its a massive expense that has to be covered so its either user pays or your rates go up to cover it. A nelson city rubbish bag is less than a cup of coffee and will take the head, skin and trotters of 2 50ldb pigs. Its over the weight limit but you can drop them into the transfer station at no charge regardless of weight. Leaving rubbish/ fly tipping is far more about attitude than cost.
