I used to run the goat control out of Kaitaia - one of my hunters got a cracker 44 inch head North Eastern end of Ratea forest - I saw a picture many years ago of one shot at Waima I think thats Waipoa Forest way 47 7/8 inches looked very similar style to this head - I believe it was the NZDA record and if my memory is correct scored 135 - another good one was a 44 in mate shot as a young fella at Tokomaru bay - interesting thing with all those heads - same style - must be the breed - possible some angora blood in them- those real stonker heads are rare - I have shot hundreds for work and best I ever got was 35 1/2- Taranaki has in general very poor heads

Only 700? That's a poor showing considering the number of LFAO

Identify your target beyond all doubt because you never miss (right?) and I'll be missed.

Average of over 14 goats per hunter. Maybe not all shooters entered the comp.
How many tails did you enter @woods223?

Should have entered but never got around to it! I imagine that many more goats would have been destroyed by LFAO, and not counted during the same period.

Gave 30 to a young fella to enter, he wasn’t having much luck an getting dis-heartened. I entered115 tails , figured that would give me a crack at winning something LOL.

not every area has access to goats.....I have to travel 3hours to get to areas that have goats...and arrange access...not feasible for something I wont eat....we do our bit on bouncy ozzie overstayers in this district.

Awesome head, congrats to your mate!

Of the thousands I've shot in Golden Bay, the best only just brushed 30"

Most of the goats here are from stock brought in by gold miners in the late 1800's, big solid animals with thick dark horns but not much spread. My old trophy showed characteristics of mixed angora bloodlines.
Mineral content of the soils also has a strong influence; East Coast NI seems to produce good trophies.
