    DoC Hunting Permits

The online system is bllldy good.
It was down when I looked but now its up again.

I see they now specify which hour of the day the permit expires. And the minute. And the second:

Haa! it starts on 07 seconds and finishes on the same so I'm getting 4 months plus a bonus second of permission. Can't complain.

Just be sure that you aren't late getting back from your hunt on the 14th of Sept.

Has anyone ever had their permit checked? Just asking out of interest. Since it's free, I can't see why you wouldn't get one.

    Yes, one time only.
Had just come out of public Omaru hut in CNI and was greeted by a doc ranger as we exited via Poronui.
Seemed a couple of dickheads had been seen and heard taking a pop at the resident Sika before they got to public land.
The culprits walked out not long after us and got the same greeting, and a free ride in a police car I believe

I have never been checked. I've never seen a doc ranger before. But I never print it off. I just get it emailed to my phone.

Never , but I always make sure I have a current one somewhere , a copy in the truck or on the phone , I heard of a couple of blokes getting pinged out of Alexandra maybe 2 years ago seemly they had permits but they had expired only a few days before , they had been told they may loose there firearms licence , not sure what the outcome was .

Iv never been checked or even seen a ranger before out hunting only time I've seen a ranger I was not in a open hunting area and got talking and he told me I should get stuck into them, and that I should be alright

That’s a no from me, have seen a couple of rangers while they were guarding a spot where there was a wasp nest but I wasn’t hunting. Good for a chat.

I really like the on line system. Only improvement they could make is to send out reminders for forgetful people like me just before they expire.
I have only been stopped once (Tongariro) by a hut warden who proceeded to spout off a complete load of lies around the rules for carrying/using a firearm in a nation park and around a Great walk.

    Thanks for the reminder @Bagheera

I have just renewed my permit and have the confirmation in my mobile.
Printed it out to keep in the truck.
@Shearer. I will mention the automatic reminder idea to the DoC staff and rangers I work with regularly.
One is an area manager and he will probably be interested in that or at least give me the details of who looks after their IT, on line permits and on line hut bookings etc

Thanks. Hope you can get a result. I spoke to DOC at the Sika show one year and they seemed to think it was a good idea too but nothing has happened.

Agree the map quality is poor. Can't zoom in. However I assume they exactly match the detail on the DOC map viewer Geocortex Viewer for HTML5 You can zoom right in on that
