    dogs chasing deer.

So I was hunting in the Kaimai's a few weeks back. When a hind came running into sight and up a bank straight toward us. My brother took the shoot and dropped it. A minute later we were joined by 4 burnt out dogs with gps collars.
Another few minutes and their owner approached saw we had killed the hind.
He said sweet as and went on his way.

Is this common? I always thought it was a big no no to let your dogs chase anything but pigs?

Common yes mode of hunting for individual from Katikati ethical? For my part no I don't think the venison would be at it's best from the stress of being chased by dogs.

Defiantly a no no in pig hunting circles...with track & train collars nowadays this bad habit should be much easier to break

I guess the question is were they targeting deer with the dogs or were they pig dogs that got side tracked?
Shut up, get out & start pushing!

    Aongatete area.
    Definitely piggies in there.
We bumped into him again on the north south track as we were carring out. He mentioned that they(deer) always run that way.
So I figured he must let them chase deer often.

I'm not complaining, each to there own if its legit.
    Just curious.

With gps collars these days, guys just let their dogs roam for miles. What happens when the get hold of a sow or piglet when your 1km away? The dogs usually just chew it to bits

Dogs hunted out for miles before GPS collars were invented, only thing now is you have a fair idea where your dogs are. If the dogs catch a small pig at a distance the death is still quicker than 1080.

What about when they hit a stroppy boar??

Tracking gear is used in many differnt ways, by many different people with differnt types of dogs doing many differnt types of hunting. Please do not take the above as gospel, leaving a dog a k away holding a pig at this time of year for half an hour would harm or kill a dog with heat exhaustion. The effort required to get a dog going and / or to get a really good dog is why people invest big $$$$ in this gear! So they know where there dogs are and can get to them as quickly as possible.

Yes dogs kill piglets, possoms, goats, deer, rabbits etc....so do hunters/shooters ...some a lot less cleanly than others, PLEASE let's not start pointing fingers!

Dogging sambar with a team of dogs requires a bit more thought as more often than not they are aiming to position themselves so the deer is chased towards them.
