[QUOTE=Kiwiman;126378]I'm thinking of getting a dog for hunting but not sure what breed, any ideas??[/Hi kiwi man , there are a few on here with deer dogs , scroll through the dog section and you will see a few . The versitiles seem to be the most popular , ie German short hairs , wire hairs pointers and Hungarian vizslas . But in saying that there are some very good labs on deer too . There are quite a few things to consider . Do you want just a deer dog ? Maybe a vizsla then or if you want to duck dog as well a lab or gsp or wh pointer ? .
Hi thanks for the info, i will have a read and see how we go
My best Hunting dog was a Curly Coat Retreiver called Sam.
She was awesome on Pheasents and Deer and not too bad on the ducks too.
So many good breeds to choose from.
Good Luck.
Cheers
Pete

Shootm, do you find the lab a bit loud in the bush when you're stalking?

GWP, but then I'm biased... Basil, 10 1/2 weeks in this photo. Such a cool character, quite different from my Springer spaniel... Can't wait to get him out on deer once he is ready

Fark here we go...which dogs best thread...these can be good!
Most of the "'hunting type" breeds from decent breeders will do the job alright with appropriate training. GWP, GSP, Vizsla, Lab, Heading dog/collie, Spaniels, etc etc etc.
I chose a GSP as my first hunting dog. Sure she shivers, whines, annoys the crap out of me, but she is a hunting mate that will NEVER let you down or be "too busy" for the quick hunt after work. While my GSP isn't perfect by any means she is a pretty versatile wee hunter. Heres' a very small selection of photos from trips on;

Up to you what breed you choose, just remember a dog is a 10 year + investment.

Look mate, this question has come up a lot and generally ends in a shit fight. Basically any breed that has been mentioned already will do the job fine, its all down to how you train it. Go for what you like, I'm going a Brittany because I like them and not because I think they are better than any other breed. Just do your research on characteristics and temperament and go with the one that you think suits you best, put in the hours and train hard and you'll have a best mate who work for you regardless of breed
I used a Weimaraner bitch, but it comes down to personal choice and what you like.
Short coated dogs and bitches are cleaner but can suffer from cold theyneed a jacket of some sort when it is cold.
Suggest if you are keen get a deer dog sooner rather than later as they are really good when sorted.
Get one when young and fit and you have the time to put in to it.
Stick to deer and if using on birds only use it to point as you only really need them to find game.
Cheers erniec
I agree with what others have said, do your research and then put in the hours training.
Hope to see your hunting adventures with your new mate in time to come:)
