Yep back in France with another invite to have a go at there Driven boar
Here’s the weather for today better throw the longjohns on be cold standing still on the stand.

Came over on Saturday there was a public strike on about fuel prices so no one on the motorways.
Went for over half an hour on one stretch before we saw another car. Reminds me of driving in the South Island

I’ll try to keep you posted on how I get on. Wish me luck the bag today is boar and red hinds and yearlings.

So the kick off after the usual lunch and health and safety briefing.
I was put out on a high stand that once the beaters had gone through I could shoot 360.

I was dropped off and climbed up set up my ammo pouch and loaded up.
I also made dame sure that I was dressed up as warm as I could be as I would be up there for two hours through two of the drives.


The rifle is an under and over 8x57jrs with one of those amipoint sights on it. Great little gun, but not so keen on the sight.
Anyway the beaters came through about half an hour after I’d climbed up.
With the sun coming through the trees is was rather hard to see any depth and distance. When the sun went you could really see quite some way. There was a high speed rail line off to my left that game trough every 20 minutes or so.
After the beaters had gone a fat little red squirrel came down from his tree and started to eat.
With my electric ear defenders on he was a right pain as all I could hear was him eating his nuts

Meanwhile I could here shots and horns signaling that a deer had been shot.
I had my head on swivel trying to pick up movement without moveing as well. I could hear leaves and a branch snap off to my right and then shuffling sounds as more leaves where moved. Soon movement and the shape of a deer as it ghosted through the trees.
I brought the rifle up and tracked him as he came to within 50meters five nice points on his right antler. I could not count the other side.
And I also could not shoot as Stags are not permitted and can only be hunted by horse and hound is this area.
He was in no hurry and moved through and then up over the bank and I lost sight of him as he moved into the cutting that hide the railway line from view.
Now from behind I could hear more movement from above the noise of my red nut munching friend!
Which only turned out to be a pheasant.
After two hours the truck turned up. Theme the breaks
I got the low down on how the rest had gotten on. Two hinds had been taken.
We now lined up for the next drive.
Almost straight away I saw boar brake out and cross the track that we where positioned on, shots but I could only guess if they had scored.
Then the other side had action followed by some horn blowing signaling an boar had been taken.
We moved to another drive but this drew a blank.
With darkness now coming we moved back to the clubhouse for a run down on the day as well as the butchering of the game taken.


Then some cold cuts and baguettes in front of the fire as well as wine and a few tall tails and good natured ribbing on who had missed what.


Another great days sport even if I didn’t get to have a shot.
Might even be going back in January for another crack at em.
Looks like I’ll have a few of these guys out here in the UK for some sporting clays fly fishing and maybe some stalking in May as a reciprocal thanks for putting up with my Kiwi ways
Some really good buggers here and very keen sportsmen and women.

At five they can become massive. And very cunning.

An interesting way to hunt, you would have to be a good running shot person to have a chance at dropping game.

When they come through on the drive they don’t muck about and just explode when coming through the gun line. They know when there safe. I had one huge old one two years ago that waited till I turned my head the other way. He had snuck close into a thick stand of hazelnut then just went flat out across the track with a loud woff once he had crossed like a feckyou
I practice once a week for the month before I go and shoot around 50 shotgun rounds through tight choke each time. I get on well with the clay ground owner and he sets up a stand so I can walk around it to get the right angles to practice on.
I aim to get the clay as soon as it comes out as this is when it’s going fastest. The simulator boar machine is the go though.

@Huk year it swings through well as for expensive nar it's a base Chappuis so around 1500 to 2000 eruos.
I'd prefer the barrels to be a bit longer so you could get more swing with them when you push through the target. But hey it's a loan gun so beggars can't be choosers.
The second fast shot is a bonus just move your finger back to the second trigger. Even though it ejects the spent cases it dose take longer to reload than moving a bolt but you not losing the site picture when you go for the second shot.
I was taught to always lift the barrel skywards when working a bolt gun. It's a habit now that I can't shake. So for driven boar this double rifle is just like using a shotgun.
It's not long so would be good in NZ for say tight bush like the Kaimais.
The Aimpoint sight on the other hand compared to my Holosun, I'd rather have the Holosun.
1 The Holosun is smaller.
2 The Holosun comes with two sight pics. A dot and a circle with a dot in the centre.
3 being smaller it dose not impede with your sight picture when used close fast moving targets.

I loved France when I was there, would love to go back and this time spend some really serious time there. cool pics.
