I have a friend that just purchased a drone for farming uses...going out and checking on calving heifers etc. the drone has a range upto 3 km and the camera on it is quite clear. We sent it out and pushed a mob of goats up this face as they are reasonably loud
Just outve curiosity, has anyone tried doing abitve scouting with a drone while out hunting? Maybe sitting on a face and send the drone out to a few different clearings over a decent distance or over abitve bush to flush something out.
We've joked about it when in the huts in the kaimanawas as it would be perfect in the morning to go check the slips before walking up to them. It would massively increase your odds of finding a deer. Is it still hunting? I really hope we don't see a day where there are drones buzzing around everywhere in the backcountry.

If I see a drone flying on public land I am going to shoot it out of the sky. Annoying buzzy things. As for checking slips before walking...lol. The deer will be gone at the buzz of a drone. Next you will want to add a thermal camera

If you are using the drone to spot animals I don't see any difference using a drone to a game camera, except one is real time and one is delayed.
If you are using it to drive/haze the animals, then its a question of your own ethics if you aren't doing anything illegal.
However, we are all adults and can make our own choices, you don't need more people preaching or telling you what to do, there is enough of that in our lives anyway, ie the wife, IRD, Council, Forest and Bird, DOC. :)

Good way to cause someone to lose some serious coin just because you dont like it. No different to cyclists in the pureoras, if it progresses to being used for hunting which it most likely will you will all need to move along with the times and get over it. Good idea, shoot your rifle upwards at a drone, even better post about it on a forum for the anti gunners to see and use against us!
I know not all cases would involve shooting upwards at it, but most do.
Even the Kea need a permit to fly nowdays, if you are paying thousands of dollars in conssecion fees flying only during daylight hours minimum 500m off the deck and not causing an annoyance to anyone at all I guess it would be ok but still disliked by anyone who saw or heard it.

I usually only take 5 or so bullets so Im not into spraying hundreds of rounds into the bush like all those E cat machine gun owners with multiple 30 round mags or just a couple of 100 round drums....or am I assuming to much?

We made a range on the farm out to 600m. We ended up using the drone to go out and see where we hit and what adjustments were needed. You could see bullet holes clearly thru the camera as we got within a meter of the target with the drone. Theyre pretty handy and very user friendly
I thought you were only allowed to fly them over your own private property. Something to do with privacy laws. So flying over your own farm checking out stock is ok, but you can't cross the boundary wire and check on the neighbors stock without their permission

As for the rules on drones, they are allowed in public land but they have a size restriction (1.5kg max or some such) and an altitude and range from pilot (line of sight)
They will be annoying, and I suspect they will get used in places that will intentionally annoy people. Like all sports and recreations there is a large group of reasonable people combined with a few arseholes to ruin it....

Hunters Club used a drone to move some geese up river in one of their episodes. Not sure if you would do it all the time but it worked well for that situation. I don't have a need (I mean money) for a drone so I will walk.
so many un-needed gimmicks etc these days, some people seem to have lost touch with good old fashioned hunting. Should be able to go hunting with ya pack and rifle and or dog and nail deer. If you need all the thermal, nightvision gear etc etc and what not then you aint doing it right or you have lost touch with "hunting"

I don't think anyone here is rely promoting the idea of shooting down a drone so the red-head can get her knickers untwisted. I just think it is sad when something like hunting becomes a kind of high tech race to the top rather than man vs deer/pig etc. I think we have enough advantage with a scoped rifle and/or dogs but hay it's a free country just please don't ruin the peace of the back country. Helicopters are annoying enough.
It's a good idea, but I think we should use drones as target to shoot. :)
