Thread: Durston X-Mid 2 solid tent

I bought one of these the other day. $653 to my door, arrived in less than a week. Total weight 1130g. Only put up in the backyard so far. Will need a footprint as the floor material is pretty light. Has a big vestibule on both sides. I’m 6’4” and plenty of room to lie down inside.
There are heaps of reviews on YouTube.
Looking forward to getting it out in the hills (heaps lighter than my Macpac Olympus)

Weight is pretty good but I have an Exped Mira 2 that is not too heavy and the weight for it is all up poles, pegs etc.
When you weigh up two walking poles and maybe a footprint the difference on the lighter tents becomes a toughie to justify spending.
But interested in NZ hunter use versus an American Hiker.

Yep bought it through Kaviso. Used fed-ex for shipping. I use poles anyway so no extra weight there.

I have started using poles too.
The fly up first, looks bloody quick to put up and width for two wide mats makes it tempting.

Bought one of these a couple of years ago. Looks very similar. Great as a roomy light weight option.

I heard rumors of the KUL being around $900 which if correct is pretty good for materials and NZ made.

The Moa 2 is 1085g. So only 80g lighter but about $500 dearer that the Durston.

I brought one of the first batch of these done through "Mass Drop" . I had quite a long correspondence with Dan Duston before purchasing and I think the design is sound, although we discussed adding skirts to the fly for the very high wind conditions that South Is tops hunting sometimes requires.

I never got round to fitting the skirts and consequently have always reached for my proven One Planet "Goondie" when heading out. I must actually try it out!

Is it NZ made?

It is, made from new fangled fabric called UltaTNT, better than cuben fibre apparently.

Kiwi ultralight make awesome lightweight sleeping quilts too.

Thing I've been curious about is what you fella's would do during the day if you went for a roam and left your tent up? You not use your poles when you are day hunting from camp?

@Maxx normally I do take my poles with me. Will just have to see how it works out.
