    Easter

Apparently I have enough brownie points to get away for all 4 days over Easter, yet for some reason I'm reluctant to go hunting on long weekends as it brings out the clowns. Who else feels that way inclined to stay home in holiday seasons?

Unless on private land I am much more inclined to hunt mid week for the most part.

I've been told by an old hunter. One of the best times to go out, is the day after a long weekend. The deer will be feeding out longer after been hunkered down all weekend from everyone being out and about.

You couldn't pay me to go into the hills around here at Easter, carparks are full and the huts are overflowing with once a year hunters after a 12 point red, all the ever seem to do is drink a 12 pack and leave the rubbish at the hut.
Our road end carpark goes from 1-2 cars most weekends to 15 plus over Easter.
Even mustering the bush edge on a horse at that time is a no.

Not only Easter... Opening morning especially, but usually all duck shooting season, as a kid I was always wary about rabbit shooting near our back dam. It was only 200m from the Patea river and there were always spent shotgun shells scattered around it. Even as a youngster I knew it was too dangerous due to the poachers (esp weekend mornings) who would sneak onto the farm to that dam. It was lower in the gully and it would be only too easy to walk over the bank from the paddock and be behind a mob of ducks some loser was blasting at....

My theory is go go somewhere that requires over an hour to walk. Most idiots want to shoot something from the car park.

Still believe there's a better chance to be "taken out" on the drive to your hunting spot.

it looks like the mayhem has already started. Went for a quiet weekend away, out with the camera. Had a campsite to ourselves. But we saw lights out on the riverbed last night, a party of 3 on the hill just upstream from us, another party across the river this morning. And 12 vehicles plus one walking party went down river this afternoon ahead of the Nor Wester. Mid week seems to be the go for the next month or so!

I’m actually considering skipping the roar altogether this year. 90 percent of the public access in HB is buggered and people will crowd into whatever road ends are still accessible. I doubt I’ll be the only one to decide to wait.

You aren't alone in thinking that.

I did consider it , but we’ve just had a baby. I was hoping to just do a short 3 dayer and wait till hes a bit older before I fly in anywhere.
I think you’re right though, I’d say the front end of the Kawekas will be pretty clear of people. Easy spots suddenly becoming a whole lot harder

IF I go out on public land..I shall be wearing numerous colours of hi-vis .
the last 2 times I have gone,Ive shot a hind and on other a fawn then hi tailed it out of dodge..making LOTS of noise..wont call it singing on way out to wagon.
private land contacts are pure GOLD at this crazy time...ringing your hunting mates while you are sitting watching 2 stags,2 hinds AND a bull thar, all within 300 yards of you....not that is PRICELESS.walking away leaving then to do their thing is VERY good for the soul.
