Thread: Easy Access Hunting

Anyone know of a place I could hunt during the roar - problem I have is mobility after a accident; I'm still recovering - I can walk a fair way - but would prefer something with tracks, and easyish going land - We do have a argo - great for distances

Any help would be great - last 2 years roar's were ruined because of this - 3rd time lucky?!

On the flipside, the bush up thompsons is pretty thick with supplejack. So you have easy access on the clearing, but the surrounding bush is quite the opposite.

Thompson's track in the Kaimais is the most accessible hunting spot I know of. It is a 4wd track which is in good shape, especially if its been dry - when I was up there last I even toyed with the idea of driving my 1.5l little nissan sentra up there (I don't have a 4wd). You could drive most the way up and once you get to the top, its about a 15min walk (on a good track) to a big clearing. Like any place that is easy access, it gets pretty hammered; but in saying that, it still produces. I don't know what its like in the roar though, you could PM spook to ask him, he is a local and lives at the start of the track. If you are lucky, it will be that place that everyone who hunts it will say "Hell know, go to that place in the roar? that's like suicide, if its busy outside of the roar, it will be super busy during it". Sometimes a popular spot will be left alone in the roar because everyone goes further afield, or thinks it will be over-populated. Its worth looking into.

I hope you have a good roar in spite of the mobility issue.

Phillip, we could think about altering our roar plan to accommodate faregame. We could set up the base camp where we were last time and operate from there. That way faregame could at least hunt the tracks and you and I (and Dougie if she comes) could still peel off and spend 2 - 3 days and nights out in the middle.

So after today don't know if even fit enough
Have the Argo so can at least move around on that and walk some

Northern side of Clement Mill Rd in the Kaimanawas could be an option.
There are lots of old forestry tracks and plenty of terraces to walk along.
Only downside is that its SH1 for hunting during the roar and will be shot to shit afterward... but with sika anythings possible!
