The elusive pureora stag hare stoat animal

I saw a flash of brown fur as something turned and ran away from me so sneaked in closer to see what i am 90% sure was a big hare jumping over some brush and fallen tree branches. Is this a common occurance to see a hare 500m+ from the nearest farmland? Didn't see a tail so dont think it was a stoat but could be the smallest deer ever seen ever haha
