    Fallow NI

    Hi all,
Being busy with work and family commitments has meant that the red roar is all but non-existent for me this year.

This got me thinking that I could have a go at fallow, as they’re on a little later. If never chased (or even heard) a rutting fallow buck. Are there any DoC land spots in the upper to middle NI where I can go and have a reasonable chance of hearing something? Obviously there’s the whole Whanganui NP, but my understanding is that large tracts of it are devoid of deer, and the best fallow spots are jet boat access? Yes, I’ve looked at the DoC website, but often find their info vague/out of date.
Any general pointers much appreciated, thanks in advance.

I was going to say Wanganui but you have ruled that out. Where ever you go you are listening for a croak not a roar.

Haha. I’m aware that all of the open country surrounding the NP has fallow running through it, was more interested in hunting the DoC land for a few days, as opposed to stalking farm boundaries. I know fallow are grazers, so the farmland would hold the bulk of them. My quad is out of action which effectively rules out the whole bridge to nowhere/bettjmans area, just thought someone would be able to say something like “enter at such and such a road end, the deer inhabit the area, the rest is up to you”. Perhaps that’s asking a bit much?

Way too late for this year's ballot period, but you can get 2-day permits from 1st May.

Few months back went down the road to Koranga Station to check on some trout water. Gisborne countryside is littered with the no poaching signs. 1/2 way down the road @ 3.15pm we saw and watched a very fat fallow hind in the middle of the road.Stopped the truck.Funny because on the Wharekopae rd going up we saw a couple of fallow just tucked off the side of the road in some small scrub.Noticed them because I was taking a call of nature.
