    Fallow stag

Lately on my job I've had a stag coming out on our tracks about once every 3 or 4 nights. He seems to follow the same path but I loose it when he gets into the grass at the back of the block.

A few questions, The mark seems rather large (60-70wide x 90-100long)for a fallow. In saying that though I haven't had a lot of experience with animals of this nature. Is that to big for a fallow or would it more likely be a red?

As for the range of this animal, the patch of bush hes coming out of is a stand of mature pine about 600m2, with a large native gully/creek/bog in the middle. The stand is surrounded by a strip of farm about 100m wide and then into another stand of mature pine. There is a lot of sign within the stand but not much leading out of it, could it be possible hes bedding down in the native gully during the day? or would that patch be to small and hes more likely coming through across the farm from the larger stand out the back?

I've set a trail cam on one of the highways over the weekend so hopefully that will have some answers as to what he is and how often hes coming through.

Any info of the behavior of fallow stags would be much appreciated.

The fallow in my area are scraping pads out and marking territory currently, im no expert on fallow but with my 5 or so trail cameras i have found that one mature stag is moving around a bit and doing his thing at night, guess it has something to do with the full moon. I have found one main scrape area with 4-5 big scrape pads within about 15 square meters and some pretty good rub marks and thrashings. The other pads are a bit further away and a few younger bucks are making them, should be an interesting rut.

This area is also got a similiar sized pine plantation then natives and farm land, not to much sign in the pines, its all on in the natives and clearings.

The bucks will be starting to go to their rutting grounds as i said so he is possibly doing a big loop of the block looking for does and getting ready.

Trail camera will answer your questions, sure sounds like a decent animal judging by the foot print.

At that size I would tend to say a red.

Yea that's what I thought but I've been told the area is predominantly fallow.

Anybody here know of reds around mid-northern areas of Rotoiti-Rotoma lakes?
