Yeah, youll cross the bridge then up the short 40 min gutbuster. Then carry on along cone ridge and take the first turn off down to cone hut. Tutuwai is 40 to 50 mins downstream of cone hut. The shorter walk is offset by slightly longer drive time tho

That's fine by me ha ha ha, it said on the DoC site that you have to ford a river to get to the Waiohine gorge campsite? Hopefully it's not too nasty since Manual Man's car has tyres the size of dinner plates and as much ground clearance as a Corgi ha ha.

hi, i would go back to the mangatoetoe, on a good day you should see more deer there than in the tarauas, try the left fork, r/side, sidle up to the head of the little mangatoetoe. or follow track up river towards kawa kawa saddle then hunt to your right, keep up high and hunt back down main ridge back to the hut. i meat hunted and possum trapped this area in the 70s and early 80s

Thanks Abbo, that's some solid advice. I'm definitely going to try Mangatoetoe next time, not because Tutuwai was that bad or anything, I'd just like to see as many as possible while I'm here - carrying beer into Mangatoetoe ought to be easier too :-D
