    Fawn and Hind calls

I make a very poor attempt at both of these. Wondering in what situation NZ hunters use them. Mainly thinking reds but open to hear about this technique in general.
Are there calls that can be bought that imitate either for reds?

I'll give a bleat to stop a hind if I have bumped one in the bush.....works maybe a third of the time if just bumped not smelt.

I think those newer electronic callers have fawn and hind calls as well as the stag stuff.

    What do they sound like?
I think someone needs to record themselves doing one.

Checkout “The descendants “ by bow hunt Downunder on YouTube they use hind calls to bring in stags at the start and end of the film.

its almost like the nek in nek minute...nasally as heck
I use it where used to use an OIH to stop deer or make it look up.it will cast dought in deers mind as to what just spooked it...sort of like giving roar or bark at spooked stag, they sometimes turn and come back for 2nd look, sure stag thinking with little head at that time, but theory is same.

I've always just used it for a spooked animal but I had a go at using it this roar, once I'd located a stag (heard or sighted) I'd roar very occasionally but use a hind call every few minutes. Got me some close encounters with a handful of stags, mostly younger specimens.

Some encounters weren't very convincing with the stags being quite suspicious but it workrd good enough that I'll be trying it again next roar.

Pinch/ squeeze your nose while making the hind Mew
For the fawn distress call a piece of grass held between both thumbs makes a very passable call. The grass must be held taut between the thumbs with the knuckle slightly bent. Blow through the gap to produce a distressed Peeep !

I have been carrying one of these around for many a year, a soft blow imitates fawn, a hard blow gives a squeal. Sika cant help themselves when soft blown, they just have to investigate.

The grass whistle will give the right tone as a guide for making a call. Should we now expect to see a home made deer call to be displayed alonside the excellent fishing lures ??. I have made some but getting the right Reed material is the hardest part. A narrow piece of 'Nopi' tape has worked best.

How cool ! Is it possible to disassemble it so we can see how it is made ?
