    Feral goats for meat

I have been culling a lot goats for fellow farmers around me and hate what a waste of meat it is sometimes. Have looked into a couple companies that take goat carcass but have to have a lot of chiller space or chiller trailer unit to store and deliver them to meet there requirements. Just wondering if anyone knows people that pay to take them as dog food or what not?

Make some friends in the local Indian community and you will never waste goat meat again, or the offal/brains etc

I think Crusader Meats at Bennydale used to buy and kill live goats, but that was a long time ago, and only an option if you could muster them.

Depends on your location. Out of the Wild (pet food business) based in Katikati will take them. A bit of paperwork to fill out to become a supplier plus some MPI hoops as well. Shipping them chilled/frozen could be a option if too far to deliver.

Cheers guys. I muster what I can already for crusader meats and then shoot the cunning ones. I did talk to the Katkati guys , also filled out all the paper work but because of where I live I needed a way to keep them chilled until I could deliver Them. So sounds like I have explored most of my options already.

You can freeze them. Need big freezer space though to handle carcasses...

I happy to sell mine to the local goat buyer live he pays for everything , month old kids $5 up to $45 for good size billy. But it gets to a point where the last ones are to cunning or on to steeper country need to be shot to get rid of them.

Have you spoken to Bill Lefeurve the goat musterer on Waitewhena Road between you and Ohura? He’s the best guy I can think of to give you a steer.

If you can’t make use of the meat by passing it on, use it yourself. I’ll regularly pull out the backstraps and rump from decent animals and after a while there’s heaps of goat in the freezer. Makes a great meat for curry and all sorts.

Graces buy them live as well and ive sold some through them in the past but there's a lot of hoop jumping to sell them dead which I have never understood.
The explanation evidently is to ensure that nothing that may have been harvested in an area that has either an active or up to 2 years prior poisoning program for tb or other vertebrate pest enters the food chain.
In my case I have 50 regional council bait stations on my farm using brodi.
I can sell goats mustered in into the human food chain exactly the same way as my beef and lamb are with no restrictions. However if attempted to supply animals to a processor that had been shot I would need to prove they had not been harvested within a certain distance from a poisoning operation boundary or that no poison had been used within a certain time frame. Yet these same animals have been running side by side with farmed stock.
Just another amusing little 3 monkey story from mpi
