My mrs had been pestering me for a while about coming out with me and shooting her first deer.
I hadn't had much luck recently so was a bit reluctant to take her out on a mission and not see anything. I didn't want to put her off the whole experience on her first outing.
Luckily with a spot of private land up my sleeve I sent the message to my mate and asked if i could bring the mrs up for a shot and secure her first deer and some venison for our upcoming wedding.
He gave me the go ahead so off we went.
When we arrived at the farm we went straight out on a tiki around seeing if we could spot any deer. We spotted 3 does up on a face with a track that would put us quite close. Up we went, We parked the truck down the track a bit and made the slow walk the last 500m to the corner where hopefully we would spot them again. They were nowhere to be seen. We soon figured out they were below a band of scrub down the face from us, this would put them about 20 or 30 metres below us, we attempted to skirt around the scrub and sight them but they heard us and bolted. Bugger!!!
The mrs wasn't too put off as it was only about 3pm so plenty of time to find some more. Plus all of my accounts of missing deer probably made sense to her now! (Thank God)
We drove around for a bit trying to figure out the next plan of attack. We came across 3 red stags but we were leaving stags and bucks alone that day so we watched them at about 80m for a bit then off we went again. We failed to find any more deer which were in a position to shoot. so we went and had dinner with the plan of a spotty mission after.
after a while spotlighting, we spotted 2 deer about 250m away, we got the mrs lined up on the bonnet and as comfortable as she could be with it. BOOM!!! smoked it right in the neck and dropped in its tracks. what a shot!
Off we went to find it. It was a nice wee spiker with a good skin on him. I gutted it out for her and backpacked it so she could carry it. and carry it she did. back up the hill to where we left the truck. Big grin all the way. Fair to say she is hooked. venison for the wedding sorted!!!
