Fiordland hunting question. Can I hunt out of ballet season?

    Hey!

Just a quick question. I am heading down south and will be targeting some Wapiti deer in Jan. Around the fiords and I have a boat.

According to the ballet they give blocks for the Wapiti Roar period. Is it possible to hunt this area outside of the Roar? The topo50 excludes all the block areas. Because these animals are such a pest I thought we could hunt them outside of the ballet?

Anyway if someone could easily clear this up.

Also are there good numbers of Wapiti around the neighbouring area outside of the blocks?

The blocks get closed to hunting early March or slightly earlier, Check with DoC Te Anau when it actually is.

Core blocks are closed from 31st December this year. Basically all the blocks are clasped as core blocks

    Them's fightin' words!

I'd rephrase and perhaps re-examine your motivations there Andre. The fact that you're calling Wapiti a pest means you are likely in need of a little education in the finer points of hunting NZ's most prestigious game animal, plenty of good resources available online and through the FWF to help.

I don't think we should take this post seriously - at least I hope we shouldn't.

    Well overdue.
@AndreNZ if you think or treat the Wapiti as pests don't bother coming down, they are one of NZ's premier game animals and hunting experiences, available because of the hard work of the FWF and ballot hunters who have donated the money to ensure they are where they are today.

Calm down, guys! Calling the animal a pest came directly off "The Hunting Show" podcast episode I was listening to today when they were talking about these deer. Not my words, just a direct quote. All deer are pests technically in NZ. If you have a problem with calling them a pest, have it up with Roy Slogan who is the president of the FWF. OMG, I forgot how pesky forums are!

So Jan is out of the ballet season so fine to hunt, but there is a big gap in the map where I want to hunt?

Any ideas? Or is this like Waikaremoana where it is a separate permit?

Suggest you stick to hunting Waikaeramoana - the wap blocks are off limits

I'll sit on the fence with this one.
I can see getting some experience on what it's like down there i.e. If you have a block for next year and do a recy trip.
