Fiordland Reds, any suggestions?

Hi all,
I'm cruising into queenstown tonight then walking the routeburn track, after that I want to spend a week in fiordland chasing reds. Does anyone have any suggestions of a place that is accessible and relatively safe for a solo hunter? I'm thinking of doing a big walk into the iris burn up behind the hut and away from the trampers. I think it'll be quite good in there but its a massive walk with a big pack which means I give up two days full hunting so accessibility isnt the best. I wouldnt mind paying to get a boat across lake te anau if its not too expensive. I think a heli would be too expensive by myself. Open to any suggestions, PM me if youd rather it be private. Can't really comment on hunting reds in Fiordland but the Routeburn was a blast, you'll have a great time and see some fantastic scenery if the weather plays nice.

Your other options are off the south coast waitutu area, also Eglinton valley and Hollyford valley.

I have been told more than once that the Neale Burn (off the beginning of the milford track) is worth a look.

Some nice accessible country in the Borland / Green Lake kind of area (couple hours walk to Green Lake hut from Borland Road) too, not sure what animal numbers are like.

Nice side trip off the top of the Routeburn is to drop down from Harris Saddle and sidle around Lake Harris, then follow up the stream that feeds Lake Harris into the Valley of the Trolls. Cool spot, if you have time from there you can scramble up a wee gut to the right of the obvious waterfall and that takes you to Lake Wilson.

I'm basically no help but will say if you get into steep coastal country walk in from the shore till it goes near vertical and sidle round 100mASL max,My one trip into coastal Fland there were bloody shit loads of animals in this zone because its the bottom of all the slips and feed.

Someone I know tramped the Routeburn and saw a couple of deer from the track
If you go to Hollyford, Gunn Camp is a must see or a good base camp. The Graff boys did one of the Roaring Reds from the South clips from there.
Driving the Eglington Valley has deer screaming everywhere - or so it feels

Have a great trip. That is an awesome part of the country.

Cheers for all the input boys. When I get out the other side I'll do some map work and sus out a plan. Whatever I end out doing it'll be a fun mission.

Take care young fellah, you are by yourself and in big country. Make sure that PLB of mine is in handy reach. I sincerely hope you don't have to use it but there is no point it being right at the bottom of your pack and out of reach if you do need to.

Up the Irisburn the deer are around the hut ;) The choppers hammer that area. Better off heading around back valley.

If I was your old man Phil, I'd be super proud of my adventurous son getting out there and doing it. I wish I'd spent more time tramping around the south when I was living there about your age. Give it heaps mate and good luck!

Alot of people make the same mistake !!! Back valley , Thick as pig shit ! only one clearing , thrashed by the Hellie boy's , and full of swamps !!and no hutts . Good for a days walk if you like water !!!

Mulling a few things over, booking 3 w'ends for duck hunting season, that takes care of most of May, and just talking my mate on doing a roar week, probably in the Kaimanawas.......all good fellar!!!!!!
