    fires on doc land

hey all im a young fulla who tries to get out as much as possible but due to it being winter i dont get out as much as i dont have super good gear designed for the cold nights and im restricted to being in a hut which may be full at times. so i was wondering what were the rules were about having a fire at your own bivy to stay warm so you dont have to rely on huts.

Definitely, go for it, learn how to make a fast heating smaller type fire and have at it. As an aside, DoC doesnt have any land, they are just the managers of Public Conservation Land........public.

Its not DoC land. Its public land (yours), only administered by DoC. As others have said go for it and use common sense. In the depths of winter a roaring big fire warms and cooks well. At the height of summer a completely different approach needs to be taken.

Absolutely. As all above. Just make sure it's completely out after use

Just make sure the conditions pass the headline test... i.e. are you likely to be reading "Hunter responsible for large forest fire" in the days following... I bloody love a good campfire, and while, as above, you're generally pretty sweet in winter, it doesn't take much at all for it to go from 'Ahhhhhh..." to 'Ahhhhh Fuuuuuck!!!'

Note common sense is a very, very strong theme above.

What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

Way back in 1972 while in the army (fuck is it really fifty years ago) I killed and cooked a wood pigeon while doing a survival exercise. The directing staff found the feathers and at the debrief asked who had done this. Proud as punch I stuck my hand up (my dearly departed nana would have been proud of my honesty and looking after myself in the bush like she had shown me). Fucking cost me two weeks confinement to barracks and loss of wages. That is a long way of me saying “never again”. I have often wondered about the taste of Whio (and they can be found not all that far from that camp fire). What do they taste like mate? Ha ha ha ha

Common sense is essential but be aware, the former Rural Fire Authority (now replaced by Fire and Emergency NZ) had the ability to charge the full cost of fire suppression for a fire that got out of control. There was a case in the Kaimanawa Ranges a few years ago when a hunter received a bill for $250K after his camp fire ripped through tussock and into a pine plantation. If you have a fire, make sure you have the means to extinguish it if it runs away!

Whio are not as tough and stringy as kakapo, but sweeter than Takahe. My pick would have to be the Huia after they have been on the miro berries

Can I suggest you consult the FENZ ACt on the potential liability to pay for fire supression?

You're correct that under the previous legislation ( Forest and Rural Fires Act) a prerson causing a fire was liable for supression costs, while someone who caused a fire 'in town' wasn't. The FENZ Act now 'equalises' that, so no one is automatically liable for supression costs.

As an aside, that renders one of the arguments for belonging to a club (often members would be covered by the club's liability cover) largely redundant.
