Thread: First deer with the 45 70 subsonic and over the pup

I just returned from a weeks holiday in vanuatu and was dieing for a hunt so set off with the pup Saturday morning and got to my posy around 12pm. We set off to the open ridges about 2km from the truck. The dog was ground scenting all over the place but the wind was minimal and slightly at our back unfortunately. Moving down a ridge i spotted a deer moving side on around 30m away and told the dog to sit. I lifted the rifle and lined up on a gap in the trees about 4m in front of the deers direction of travel and she slowly trotted out then whack! Knew i had hit her as the sound is an almighty thump. She took about 10steps and stood still so i plugged her again and she took off. I watched her drop about 50m away so i set the dog off to track her which he did well. Got to about 20m away and she got up but she was buggered so wasnt too stressed she made around another 20m before collapsing. The dog was very excited and just about walked past her but got there in the end. Tail wagging a million miles per hour. There was a hole through the shoulder, hole behind the ribs and one through the neck so not sure where the other entry was but they are a perfect hole with no shock damage so hard to find! The red dot is great to use and im glad i use it effectively with subs. On a side note, are the lungs all good? Red patches but i presume its blood.
